Job Title: Optician / Sales Associate

Job Summary: The Optician / Sales Associate is a sales role. Duties include working with patients to help them pick the perfect pair of frames and the best pair of lenses to fit their lifestyle and/or contact lenses.  This role requires core skills in retail sales, medical terminology, and optical experience, while also valuing a commitment to patient service.

Bilingual candidates, particularly in Spanish, are encouraged to apply, as effective communication is essential in our diverse community. Join us in enhancing the vision health of our patients while thriving in a supportive environment.

We will cross-train with front desk and doctor's assistant duties.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service skills, strong sales skills, technical expertise in eyewear, and a keen eye for fashion and style and a friendly approachable demeanor. The ideal candidate will also have experience operating a Fundus camera, OCT (optical coherence tomography), Humphrey's Visual Field, & Corneal Topographer.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Interaction:
    • Greeting patients warmly and guiding them through the eyewear selection process.
    • Provide expert advice on frame styles, lens types, and coatings based on patients' prescriptions and lifestyle needs.
    • Ensure a positive and welcoming experience for all patients.
    • Build patient loyalty & referrals.
    • Perform pre-testing of patients prior to an examination by doctor.

  2. Eyewear Fitting:
    • Accurately measure patients' eyes, including the distance between pupils (PD) and other ocular dimensions.
    • Assist patients in trying on frames and adjusting them for perfect fit.
    • Ensure that eyeglasses and contact lenses meet the prescribed specifications and patients' visual needs.
    • Stay informed about the latest eyewear trends, brands, and products.
    • Recommend suitable frames, lenses, and accessories to patients, highlighting features and benefits.
    • Upsell additional products and services to enhance patient satisfaction and meet sales targets.
  3. Technical Duties:
    • Interpret and understand ophthalmic prescriptions from eye doctors.
    • Advise patients on lens options, including single vision, bifocals, progressives, and specialty lenses.
    • Troubleshoot remakes and adjustments to patient frames.
    • Handle VSP / Davis / Spectera / Etc. vision plan authorizations independently.
  4. Product Display, Sales and Inventory Management:
    • Process sales transactions, handle insurance claims, and manage patient records accurately.
    • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of eyewear trends, brands, and products.
    • Maintain an organized and visually appealing product display in the optical showroom.
    • Collaborate with the team to ensure an accurate and up-to-date inventory.
    • Assist in managing inventory, including ordering, stocking, and displaying eyewear products.
  5. Customer Service Excellence:
    • Address patient inquiries, concerns, and complaints in a professional and courteous manner.
    • Follow up with patients to ensure their satisfaction with their eyewear and vision care services.
    • Provide education and guidance on proper eyewear maintenance and care.
  6. Administrative Support:
  • Create & Process optical orders (jobs) for both eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Process sales transactions accurately and efficiently.
  • Oversee outstanding optical orders & coordinate with lab technician on the timely completion of lenses & frames for delivery to patient/customer. 
  • Track optical order status daily up until the eyewear is dispensed to patient / customer.
  • Handle insurance claims and patient records with attention to detail.
  • Assist with other administrative tasks as needed to support the smooth operation of the practice.
  • Other assigned duties as deemed necessary from time to time.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; certification as an Optician is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an Optician or in a similar role.
  • Strong understanding of ophthalmic optics and various types of lenses and frames.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using optical equipment and software.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail and precision in measurements and fittings.
  • A passion for fashion and a keen sense of style.
