Position Summary:
IQ Fiber is seeking a Construction Technician responsible for the daily construction and maintenance of IQ Fiber's fiber optic network. In this role, technicians perform hands-on field work including installing and relocating conduit and fiber, repairing underground plant, moving and replacing vaults and hand holes, and locating existing cables and infrastructure to protect the network during construction activities.
This is a field-based role that requires physical stamina, a safety-first mindset, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, outdoor environment. The ideal candidate takes pride in quality workmanship, represents IQ Fiber professionally in residential and commercial settings, and is committed to delivering reliable network infrastructure that serves our customers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Install, maintain, and repair fiber optic network infrastructure, including digging by hand or with trenching equipment to place cable underground, pulling fiber-optic cable through conduit, and relocating conduit and fiber as needed.
  • Remove and replace hand holes, vaults, and fiber markers; repair damaged underground plant as issues arise.
  • Install, repair, and maintain inside fiber optic cables and MDU (multi-dwelling unit) boxes.
  • Based on locate tickets from Sunshine One-Call, accurately locate and mark existing underground fiber cables to protect infrastructure during excavation and construction activities.
  • Assist with fiber cable damage restoration efforts and troubleshoot network systems as needed to minimize service disruption and customer downtime.
  • Ensure full compliance with OSHA safety standards and all applicable state and local regulations; maintain full accountability for safety, productivity, quality, and workmanship on all assignments.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by delivering quality service, maintaining a professional demeanor in the field, and keeping work areas clean and orderly in residential and commercial environments.
  • Maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and professional manner; dress in approved IQ Fiber clothing and present a neat, professional appearance at all times.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED; minimum of 1 year of telecommunications construction experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with fiber optic cable installation, conduit work, and underground plant maintenance; ability to construct small networks for MDU and public spaces using off-the-shelf solutions.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license with a clear MVR, auto insurance, and a satisfactory driving record; ability to drive during nighttime and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must pass a standard background check and drug screening.
  • Must be available for a 24/7 operation including mandatory overtime, after-hours, and weekend work; must remain in service during outages until resolved.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds repeatedly, climb ladders up to 28 feet, and work outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the shift.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and resolve issues with minimal direction in a fast-paced, high-change environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in verbal and written formats with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient computer skills sufficient to learn new applications and systems.

  • Fiber infrastructure construction and maintenance work is completed safely and efficiently, with conduit, cable, and related equipment installed, repaired, or relocated correctly to support reliable network performance.
  • Field operations consistently meet safety and compliance requirements, with OSHA standards followed and existing infrastructure protected through accurate locating, marking, and careful excavation and work practices.
  • Workmanship quality is consistently high, with installations and repairs meeting company and technical standards the first time and requiring minimal rework, callbacks, or corrective actions.
  • Service needs and outages are addressed quickly and effectively, with strong troubleshooting and restoration execution that minimizes network disruption and reduces downtime for customers.
  • IQ Fiber is represented professionally in the field, with a customer-focused approach maintained in residential and commercial environments through respectful communication, clean work areas, and dependable follow-through.
