What Your Job Will Be Like
At the cutting edge of prototype development and testing hardware fabrication, the Rapid Development Machine Shop team delivers precision machining solutions that enable Sandias critical national security and scientific missions. As part of Sandias commitment to innovation in advanced manufacturing, we produce complex components and custom testing hardware that drive research and development efforts across diverse technology areas
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented GT1 machinist trades to join our collaborative team. In this role, you will develop foundational skills in precision machining and hardware fabrication using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques. Working alongside other machinists and engineers, you will contribute to the creation, refinement, and assembly of prototype parts and testing hardware that support a wide range of R&D projects and gain hands-on experience in machining processes, materials, and quality standards that are critical to our national security.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Fabricate metal, plastic, ceramic, or composite components to specifications utilizing CNC, manual, and hand tools
  • Program CNC tools to fabricate components using MasterCam
  • Estimate time to fabricate a component
  • Discuss component design and manufacturability with customers
  • Document work in a database
  • Team with others to define process strategies including techniques, tooling, and fixture design
  • Work safely and maintain security
  • Communicate with staff, technologists, and management
  • Mentor apprentice machinists

Qualifications We Require
  • Experience generating multi-axis CNC machine tool paths with the capability of driving 2-5 axes.
  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM programming tools for CNC machines such as Solidworks and MasterCam or other programs.
  • Examples of your contribution in design for manufacturability solutions and design definition review.
  • Ability to successfully define machining processes and strategies to include collaboration on machining techniques including the design of special tooling and fixtures.
  • Experience interpreting and fabricating Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance definition.
  • Ability to schedule work and maintain database of jobs.
  • Excellent communication and teaming skills to effectively work with staff, technologists, and management.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
  • As a condition of employment, Metal Trades positions are represented by the Metal Trades Council (MTC) and represented employees must pay the monthly dues or agency fee.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Current DOE Q clearance.
  • Experience with Haas Controllers.
  • Experience with Meso-Machining and EDM
  • Experience in programming and operating EDM machines
  • Proficiency in Master Cam
  • Minimum of 5-8 years as a fully qualified Materials Processing Specialty Tradesperson or Completion of a State approved Materials Processing Specialty Apprenticeship Program

The Advanced Metal Processing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in laser machining/surface modification, precision engineering, and metal additive manufacturing. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of components by conventional subtractive machining, additive manufacturing, electrical discharge machining (EDM), laser machining, laser etching/annealing, optical probe measurements, as well as technical consulting. Metal additive manufacturing expertise includes alloy development, qualification/acceptance, and design. Current technologies utilized include laser powder bed, wire arc and laser, and directed energy deposition (DED).
