Description

The Operations Support Specialist is a hands-on, mission-driven role that supports the daily operational needs of The Neighborhood Village. This position plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and well-functioning environment for neighbors, staff, and visitors.

This role supports multiple operational areas, including warehouse operations, facility maintenance, landscaping and groundskeeping, vehicle fleet support, food services assistance, and garden programming. The Operations Support Specialist works collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and neighbors to ensure the Village remains a place of dignity, hospitality, and community.


Requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • General Operations and Leadership
    • Assist the Maintenance Superintendent with special projects and operational initiatives.
    • Support cross-departmental efforts that strengthen Village operations.
    • Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and neighbors to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.
    • Contribute to the overall culture of care, hospitality, and dignity within the community.
    • Perform other operational duties as needed to support the success of The Neighborhood Village.
  • Warehouse and Inventory Operations
    • Assist with the pickup, receiving, sorting, and distribution of donated goods for The Neighborhood Village and outreach programs.
    • Maintain clean, organized, and safe warehouse spaces.
    • Support inventory tracking and communicate supply needs to the Maintenance Superintendent.
    • Coordinate deliveries and assist with organizing items for programs, neighbors, and community needs.
  • Maintenance and Facility Support
    • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs in Village units and shared spaces.
    • Assist with upkeep of facilities, including Unity Hall, communal areas, and outdoor spaces.
    • Support preventive maintenance efforts to ensure facilities remain safe and functional.
    • Respond to maintenance needs and operational issues as they arise.
  • Landscaping and Groundskeeping
    • Assist with landscaping, grounds care, and general property upkeep across The Neighborhood Village.
    • Maintain outdoor spaces to ensure a welcoming and safe environment for neighbors and visitors.
    • Support seasonal projects, property improvements, and community beautification efforts.
  • Vehicle Fleet Support
    • Assist with basic maintenance, fueling, cleaning, and organization of the Salt + Light vehicle fleet.
    • Ensure vehicles used for outreach, food distribution, and transportation are safe and operational.
    • Support staff in preparing vehicles for program use.
  • Food Services Support
    • Provide assistance to the food services team when needed.
    • Support food preparation, distribution, and logistics for Village meals and food truck operations.
    • Assist with food deliveries, supply pickups, and food distribution events.
  • Garden Program Support
    • Assist with planting, maintaining, and harvesting crops within the Village garden.
    • Support seasonal garden preparation, including clearing garden boxes, soil preparation, and irrigation support.
    • Help maintain a clean and organized garden environment.
    • Support neighbors participating in garden and food production activities.

Requirements 

  • Qualifications
    • Required
      • Hands-on experience in maintenance, landscaping, warehouse operations, or similar operational roles.
      • Ability to safely operate vehicles and assist with fleet management tasks.
      • Strong teamwork, flexibility, and problem-solving skills.
      • Commitment to Salt + Light's guiding principles of dignity, radical hospitality, belonging, love, and compassion.
      • Ability to lift, carry, and perform manual labor as required for operational tasks.
    • Preferred
      • Experience operating a forklift.
      • Experience working in community-based, nonprofit, or social service environments.
      • Basic knowledge of facility maintenance, groundskeeping, or light mechanical work.
