Job description

Hunton Trane, a division of the Hunton Group, is seeking an experienced Startup & Warranty Technician to plan, coordinate, and execute startup activities within Applied Commercial HVAC systems. This position ensures that applicable mechanical and controls systems are installed, tested safely and in accordance with design intent, applicable codes, project specifications, and owner requirements. The ideal candidate brings experience with typical commercial system components such as packaged roof top units, air handlers, variable refrigerant systems, air cooled chillers, and cooling towers. As a technical authority during startup, this individual may be called upon to coordinate with construction teams, subcontractors, equipment vendors, controls providers, commissioning agents, design professionals, and the owner to deliver safe, reliable, and fully operational systems.

Key Responsibilities
Startup and Warranty Execution
  • Execute detailed startups according plans and procedures while maintaining scheduled time frames.
  • Coordinate mechanical, electrical, controls, and vendor startup activities into one integrated effort.
  • Verify that systems are installed in accordance with design documents, project specifications, and readiness requirements before startup.

Technical Execution
  • Oversee the startup of commercial systems, including but not limited to specific componentry:
  • Pumps
  • VFD's
  • Heat exchangers
  • Valves, sensors, and instrumentation
  • Building automation systems (BAS)

Coordination & Communication
  • Communicate with mechanical trades regarding schedules, punch lists, startup and warranty logs and training.
  • Communicate with HT management system readiness requirements, risks, and open issues clearly to all stakeholders.
  • Participate in commissioning meetings, progress reporting, and client updates where applicable.

Documentation & Turnover
  • Ensure the completion and accuracy of pre-functional checklists, startup reports, test results, and deficiency logs.
  • Support complete and timely system turnover to the owner and operations teams.

Safety & Quality
  • Enforce site safety standards throughout all startup and commissioning activities.
  • Conduct risk assessments and establish safe startup sequencing.
  • Ensure quality-control standards are maintained throughout commissioning.
  • Promote a disciplined commissioning culture focused on safety, quality, reliability, and accountability.

Qualifications
  • 5-10 years of relevant applied HVAC equipment experience
  • Strong knowledge and proven experience implementing the startup of typical commercial HVAC systems.
  • Fundamental understanding of instrumentation, controls, and BAS systems.
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and competing priorities under tight schedules.
  • Detail-oriented approach with a strong focus on safety, quality, and reliability.
