Job description

Director of Health Plan Operations & Growth

Location: Southfield, MI (Fully On-site Position)

Overview:

We’re launching a new healthcare insurance venture—and we're looking for a dynamic, entrepreneurial professional to join our founding team. This role will support the full lifecycle of developing and operationalizing a healthcare benefits plan from the ground up. You’ll play a hands-on role in designing, building, and scaling the internal operations of the plan while also collaborating with business development teams to promote and sell the plan to employer groups with 50+ employees.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the end-to-end development of a new health insurance plan, including:
    • Benefits design
    • Network development
    • Claims operations
    • Customer service infrastructure
    • Compliance and regulatory submissions
  • Work cross-functionally with leadership, actuaries, legal, tech, and marketing teams to launch and scale operations.
  • Coordinate project timelines and ensure delivery of critical startup milestones (filings, licenses, systems implementation, etc.).
  • Partner with the business development team to identify, engage, and close employer group prospects.
  • Participate in sales meetings and provide technical or operational expertise during client discussions.
  • Develop sales collateral, benefit summaries, and operational presentations for prospective clients.
  • Represent the health plan at industry events, employer forums, and strategic partnership meetings.
  • Monitor and improve processes, KPIs, and overall plan performance.

Qualifications:

  • 3–7 years of experience in health insurance, healthcare operations, startup environments, or benefits consulting.
  • Strong understanding of insurance operations, including underwriting, claims, provider networks, and regulatory filings (ACA, ERISA, etc.).
  • Business development, B2B sales, or employer group benefits sales experience is highly preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment and wear multiple hats.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Passion for improving the healthcare system and building something from the ground up.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a health plan or TPA environment
  • Familiarity with self-funded vs fully-insured plan designs
  • Startup experience or strong entrepreneurial mindset
