Job description

Mechanical Journeyman

Compensation: $24.00 to $32.00 per hour

Employment Type: Contract with ability to extend or convert to perm (Depends on performance and business need)

Openings: 1

Location: Within 60 miles of Mobile, AL

Work Setting: Primarily onsite at construction jobsites, with some service opportunities

Travel: Occasional local/regional travel, including occasional overnight stays

Schedule: Field construction schedule, overtime may be available based on project needs

Mentorship: Candidates who support Youth Force mentoring after hours may be paid overtime

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Journeyman for commercial and industrial construction projects within the Mobile, AL area. This role is ideal for a hands-on HVAC/mechanical professional who can install, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and support startup of mechanical systems while maintaining high standards for safety, quality, productivity, and professionalism.

This position works under the direction of a Mechanical Superintendent and requires someone who can perform mechanical work independently, support project schedules, and help mentor apprentices and less-experienced field employees. Key Responsibilities

  • Install HVAC equipment, including rooftop units, split systems, heat pumps, mini-splits, air handlers, exhaust fans, make-up air units, dedicated outdoor air systems, CRAC units, package units, and related equipment.
  • Install ductwork systems, including rectangular, spiral, double-wall, and specialty duct systems.
  • Install refrigerant piping, condensate piping, gas piping, supports, hangers, curbs, equipment pads, vibration isolation, and related mechanical accessories.
  • Assist with controls installation and mechanical system integration.
  • Perform equipment rigging and setting operations as directed.
  • Troubleshoot HVAC and mechanical systems and identify corrective actions.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Assist with equipment startup, testing, balancing, and commissioning activities.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, submittals, and shop drawings.
  • Coordinate work activities with Superintendents, Project Managers, and other trades.
  • Maintain accurate material inventory and communicate shortages.
  • Support project punch list completion and closeout activities.
  • Follow OSHA, company, customer, and jobsite safety requirements.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.

Apprentice Development and Mentorship

  • Work directly with apprentices to teach trade skills, safety practices, tool identification, installation methods, and jobsite expectations.
  • Serve as a positive role model through professionalism, work ethic, attitude, and craftsmanship.
  • Assist the Superintendent in training and developing less-experienced employees.
  • Demonstrate patience and a willingness to explain mechanical concepts and installation procedures.
  • Help create a learning environment that supports apprentice growth and long-term success.
  • Teach proper tool usage, material handling, installation techniques, and trade best practices.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of commercial or industrial HVAC/mechanical experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, refrigeration principles, mechanical construction practices, and equipment installation.
  • Experience with ductwork installation, refrigerant piping, brazing, equipment setting, and startup assistance.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • EPA 608 Certification preferred.
  • OSHA 10 Certification preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally, including occasional overnight stays.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, rooftops, and aerial lifts.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, bending, climbing, and lifting.
  • Ability to work in attics, crawlspaces, rooftops, and mechanical rooms.
