Description
The University of Washington, Department of Pediatrics, Division of General Pediatrics along with the Seattle Children's Center for Diversity and Health Equity (CDHE) invites applications for a full time Research Director for the Center for Diversity and Health Equity. This candidate will be hired at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, without tenure due to funding (WOT), on the faculty-scientist track. Salary and academic appointment at University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank.
Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.
Associate and Full Professors hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.
The Research Director, Center for Diversity and Health Equity provides leadership, including planning, directing and supervising the Research-focused activities of the Center for Diversity and Health Equity in a collaborative dyad partnership with CDHE Administrative Director and other hospital and research leadership and staff.
The Research Director/Leader provides input and leadership on one or more of the following:
  1. Strategy and business development, health equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives, clinical research operations, research quality and safety, academic affairs, graduate medical education.
  2. The Research Director has a focus on providing effective leadership to ensure advances in health equity in research at Seattle Children's Research Institute (SCRI), and to bring an equity framework to all research conducted at Seattle Children's Hospital.
  3. The Director oversees existing CDHE research programs and leads creation of new programs in areas of institutional policies for research, building a pipeline for a more diverse research workforce, CDHE grant giving, and education, training, and other resources for staff and faculty to promote equity and anti-racism in research.
  4. The Director ensures that these activities are aligned with Seattle Children's goals, vision and values.

Key functions of the Research Director role include:
  1. Director FTE is non-clinical time. The time spent will be reflected by the Director's standard work schedule of meetings, huddles, as well as on-site presence and with the CDHE team and other partners.
  2. Responsible for aligning with Seattle Children's strategic objectives related to one more of the following Equity and excellence across the research institute.
  3. Works closely with CDHE Medical Director, Administrative Director and SCRI leadership to ensure effective and efficient programs and activities.
  4. Attends Center Director and Administrator Council (CDAC) SCRI meetings and is a member of CDAC representing CDHE research.
  5. Actively contributes and participates in initiatives that advance the organization's goals and objectives at the local, institute and system level. This includes but is not limited to: financial stewardship; improving the participant, family and research workforce experience; promoting diversity and inclusion and addressing issues of health equity.
  6. Participate in the recruitment, orientation, development and retention of highly competent, qualified and high-performing CDHE staff.
  7. Manage the Health Equity mentored faculty awards directly or with a faculty pathway lead managing the Health Equity award as a direct report to the CDHE Research Director.
  8. This position will be expected to support the unit's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  9. This position will be expected to supervise, evaluate, and guide staff.
  10. This position will be expected to lead and manage change.
  11. This position will be expected to interface with a broad spectrum of research faculty and staff across different institutions that interface with Seattle Children's.
  12. This position will be expected to work effectively in a team environment, balancing advocacy for one's own specialty/priorities and support of the greater goals for the organization.
  13. This position will be expected to adapt to changes in the work environment and to shifts in organizational philosophy and expectations.
  14. This position will be expected to develop effective negotiation and persuasive skills to gain consensus among multiple constituencies.
  15. This position will be expected to learn the System for Daily Improvement (SDI).
  16. This position will be expected to utilize basic computer applications such as MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) or similar tools for database creation and data tracking and learn and apply new technologies and skills.
  17. This position will be expected to engage in effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication.
  18. This position will be expected to engage in problem-solving and provide excellent customer service.
  19. This position will be expected to mentor/sponsor underrepresented people in medicine and research who are junior faculty and trainees who receive CDHE research funding from CDHE
  20. This position will be expected to engage in active listening, taking other viewpoints into consideration and encouraging feedback, especially from those who might not otherwise participate.

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. Anticipated start date is Fall of 2022.
Qualifications
The minimum qualifications listed below (along with education/experience) are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform this job successfully. Required:
  • The successful candidate will have earned a doctorate degree (MD or PhD or foreign equivalent) in a relevant field
  • Will have achieved independent research funding, an established research focus and dissemination and publication in the area of research focus.
  • A demonstrated record of research in health equity or health disparities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Familiarity with Children's continuous improvement processes and continuous performance improvement systems

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
