An Operations Research Internship is a temporary position, often offered to students or recent graduates, where individuals gain hands-on experience applying mathematical, statistical, and analytical methods to help solve real-world business problems. Interns typically work with data analysis, optimization models, simulations, and process improvement projects, supporting decision-making in fields like logistics, supply chain, finance, and manufacturing. The internship provides valuable exposure to industry-standard tools and techniques, and helps interns develop practical skills for a career in operations research or analytics.

What types of projects do operations research interns typically work on, and how much autonomy can I expect?

As an Operations Research intern, you can expect to work on data-driven projects such as optimizing business processes, developing simulation models, or analyzing supply chain performance. The work often involves collaborating with cross-functional teams like data analysts, engineers, and business managers to identify inefficiencies and propose actionable solutions. While you'll receive guidance from senior staff, interns are often given ownership of specific tasks or sub-projects and are encouraged to contribute their ideas. This balance of mentorship and autonomy helps interns build practical skills and gain exposure to real-world organizational challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an operations research intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Operations Research Intern, you need a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and analytical problem-solving, often supported by coursework in operations research or industrial engineering. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, optimization tools such as CPLEX or Gurobi, and data analysis software like Excel or MATLAB is typically required. Effective communication, critical thinking, and teamwork are essential soft skills for conveying complex findings and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure interns can analyze real-world problems, present actionable insights, and support data-driven decision-making within organizations.

What jobs can I get with an operations research internship?

An operations research internship can lead to roles such as operations analyst, supply chain analyst, data analyst, or logistics coordinator. These positions typically involve applying mathematical modeling, optimization techniques, and data analysis skills to improve organizational efficiency and decision-making.

Job description

People/Business Operations Intern (Summer 2027)

DESRI Project Management Services, L.L.C. Houston, Texas, United States

About this position

About DESRI

DESRI (formerly D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments) is a market-leading owner and operator of renewable energy projects throughout the United States. We have acquired or developed approximately 13 gigawatts of contracted capacity across a portfolio of over 85 renewable energy projects in 24 states.

At DESRI, our culture is grounded in rigorous analytics and thoughtful risk-taking, with a strong emphasis on creativity, intellectual curiosity, and continuous improvement. We operate with lean teams that prioritize efficiency and minimize unnecessary bureaucracy, enabling individuals to take ownership and move quickly. We value open, constructive dialogue and believe it leads to better outcomes. Above all, we are driven to go the extra mile and support one another, fostering a collaborative environment built on accountability, integrity, and care.

About the role

DESRI seeks talented, intellectually curious, and highly motivated students to join our Summer 2027 internship program. The internship is a 10-week program that runs from June through August, depending on academic calendars. The People/Business Operations Internship serves DESRI's Business Operations, Recruiting, and Human Capital teams and offers interns an opportunity to contribute to the people, processes, and infrastructure that enable DESRI and its employees to operate effectively and continue to grow.

Interns will work alongside experienced professionals on meaningful projects that may touch recruiting, employee programs, organizational operations, process improvement, and other firmwide initiatives. Throughout the summer, interns will work closely with mentors and project managers who will support their professional development. Interns will also have opportunities to collaborate across DESRI, participate in learning and intern events, visit an operating renewable energy asset, and present their work to colleagues at the end of the summer.

What you'll do

Depending on project needs and interests, you may contribute to projects across the following teams:

  • Business Operations: You may help analyze and improve firmwide processes, support operational initiatives, coordinate cross-functional projects, and develop tools or analyses that make DESRI more efficient and effective as the organization grows.
  • Recruiting: You may support initiatives across the recruiting lifecycle, including candidate research and sourcing, recruiting analytics, interview and program coordination, employer branding, and projects designed to improve DESRI's ability to identify and attract exceptional talent.
  • Human Capital: You may contribute to projects involving employee programs, learning and development, performance and talent management, organizational planning, people analytics, and other initiatives supporting the employee experience and DESRI's broader organizational goals.

Across these assignments, you'll have an opportunity to see how people and operational decisions support a growing renewable energy investment, development, and operating platform.

Qualifications

  • We're interested in analytical, accomplished students with a demonstrated interest in business operations, recruiting, human capital, organizational strategy, or related fields.
  • Intellectually curious individuals with strong written and verbal communication abilities, analytical acumen, sound judgment, and an interest in solving organizational problems will excel in this role.
  • A record of academic and/or professional achievement is required.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively, exercise discretion, manage multiple priorities, and approach both quantitative and qualitative problems thoughtfully is vital to this role.
  • Candidates should be comfortable working with data and developing clear, actionable conclusions from their analyses.
  • A high level of initiative, attention to detail, and interest in learning how a growing organization operates are strongly preferred.
  • Preference will be given to undergraduate or graduate students who are in their final year of full-time study following the internship.
  • Undergraduate interns will be paid $6,000 per month with a $5,000 housing stipend. Graduate interns will be paid $10,000 per month with a $5,000 housing stipend.
