Job description

Scope of Position:
The Pharmacy Operations Manager is responsible for managing the daily operational functions of the pharmacy department to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant medication-use systems. This position provides operational oversight of pharmacy services, personnel management, medication distribution systems, inventory management, regulatory compliance, and process improvement initiatives. The Pharmacy Operations Manager collaborates with pharmacy and hospital leadership to support departmental goals and serves as the Director of Pharmacy's designee for operational matters as assigned.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Manage and coordinate daily pharmacy operations to ensure safe, efficient, and effective medication distribution services.
  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, performance management, and professional development for clinical/staff pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, medication history technicians, inventory and purchasing personnel, and other pharmacy staff as assigned.
  • Oversee staffing plans, scheduling, recruitment, onboarding, training, and competency assessment activities.
  • Monitor workflow, productivity, operational performance, and service standards and implement improvements as needed
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, pharmacy practice, and organizational standards
  • Coordinate department readiness for inspections, audits, and regulatory surveys and support implementation of corrective actions.
  • Serve as the pharmacy department's designated operational lead for sterile compounding services, including oversight of IV room operations, environmental monitoring programs, staff training and competency assessment, and operational compliance with USP , USP , and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee pharmacy medication distribution and related workflow optimization initiatives.
  • Support downtime procedures, emergency preparedness activities, and business continuity planning.
  • Coordinate inventory management activities, medication storage practices, vendor relationships, purchasing initiatives, and drug shortage mitigation efforts.
  • Assist with budget planning, resource utilization, expense management, and operational performance initiatives.
  • Develop, review, and implement operational policies, procedures, and workflow standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and operational excellence initiatives.
  • Collaborate with pharmacy, nursing, medical staff, information technology, supply chain, and other departments to improve operational performance. • Participate in departmental committees, projects, and organizational initiatives as assigned.
  • Serve as the Director of Pharmacy's designee for operational matters as assigned.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications Required Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Current Connecticut Pharmacist License or eligibility for licensure.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Previous leadership, supervisory, project management, or operational management experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations, medication-use systems, and regulatory requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency.
  • Board Certification (e.g., BCPS).
  • Previous pharmacy operations management experience.
  • Experience with pharmacy automation, medication distribution systems, accreditation standards, budgeting, and workforce management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations, medication-use systems, and medication distribution processes.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory, accreditation, and pharmacy practice standards.
  • Ability to lead operational improvement initiatives and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to supervise, coach, mentor, and develop staff. • Ability to analyze operational data and implement process improvements.
  • Proficiency with pharmacy information systems, automation technologies, and Microsoft Office applications.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Provides direct supervision of clinical/staff pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, medication history technicians, inventory and purchasing personnel, and other pharmacy staff as assigned. Responsible for staffing oversight, performance evaluations, competency assessment, employee engagement, corrective action, and workforce development activities under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy.
