What is an operations manager project manager?

Operations Manager Project Managers are professionals who oversee both the operational aspects and project management functions within an organization. Their role combines ensuring daily business operations run smoothly with planning, executing, and closing specific projects. They coordinate teams, manage resources, set timelines and budgets, and work to achieve organizational goals efficiently. These managers act as a bridge between upper management and project teams, ensuring strategic objectives are met while maintaining operational excellence.

How does an operations manager project manager balance strategic oversight with hands-on project execution?

Operations Manager Project Managers are often required to juggle both high-level strategy and day-to-day project management. This dual responsibility means regularly aligning project objectives with organizational goals while also staying closely involved in timelines, budgets, and team coordination. Success in this role often depends on strong time management, clear communication, and the ability to delegate effectively. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as finance, HR, and technical departments—is common, ensuring that operations run smoothly while projects are delivered on time. Over time, professionals in this role can advance to senior leadership positions by demonstrating their ability to drive both operational excellence and successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an operations manager project manager?

To thrive as an Operations Manager Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, process optimization, and operational strategy, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as Asana, Trello, or MS Project), ERP systems, and certifications like PMP or Six Sigma is highly valuable. Job description

Operations Manager
Construction - Glazing
Greater Toronto Area
$80,000-100,000 base salary + benefits
Our client is an established commercial glazing contractor in the Greater Toronto Area that specializes in glass installation, replacement, and repair across commercial and industrial projects.
Known for quality workmanship and strong project execution, the company is looking for an experienced operations professional with both hands-on glazing technician experience and office-based project support experience.
About the Role
Our client is seeking an experienced Operations Manager to ensure projects run smoothly and efficiently from planning through installation and completion.
Reporting directly to the Vice President of Operations, this is a highly hands-on role that will act as the key operational connection between Project Managers, Estimators, Schedulers, and Installation Teams.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background as a glazing technician, combined with experience supporting projects from the office. They will understand both sides of the operation and be able to bridge the gap between what is planned in the office and what is required in the field.
The Operations Manager will split their time between the office and active job sites, ensuring projects are properly coordinated, measurements are accurate, installation methods are confirmed, and quality and safety standards are consistently maintained.
This is not a direct people-management position. Instead, the Operations Manager will provide operational oversight, technical guidance, and coordination to ensure teams have what they need to successfully execute projects.
Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the key connection between Project Managers, Estimators, Schedulers, and Installation Teams.
  • Use hands-on glazing experience to provide technical guidance and troubleshoot field issues.
  • Conduct regular site visits to review conditions, confirm measurements, and ensure projects are ready for installation.
  • Personally verify field measurements and project details when required.
  • Confirm appropriate installation methods and procedures based on project requirements and site conditions.
  • Review drawings and project specifications to ensure installation teams have accurate information.
  • Provide hands-on support to installers and assist with resolving technical or installation challenges.
  • Oversee quality control throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify deficiencies or potential issues and ensure they are addressed promptly.
  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with drawings, specifications, company standards, and safety requirements.
  • Reinforce and monitor health and safety practices on project sites.
  • Work closely with the office team to ensure information is accurately communicated from estimating and project management through to installation.
  • Confirm project readiness prior to installation, including materials, drawings, measurements, manpower, and site conditions.
  • Identify scheduling, material, measurement, or installation issues and work proactively with the appropriate teams to resolve them.
  • Support Project Managers and Estimators with technical information and field knowledge when required.
  • Help improve communication, processes, and workflow between office and field operations.
  • Provide operational updates and recommendations to the Vice President of Operations.
  • Get involved directly in the field when required to ensure projects stay on track.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Hands-on experience as a Glazing Technician is required.
  • Previous experience working in a commercial glazing environment.
  • Experience providing office-based project or operational support is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of commercial glazing installation methods and field practices.
  • Ability to accurately take and verify field measurements.
  • Strong understanding of construction drawings, site conditions, and project specifications.
  • Knowledge of quality control and construction safety practices.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and coordination abilities.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Comfortable splitting time between the office and active construction sites.
  • Hands-on approach with a willingness to get into the field and solve problems.
  • Ability to coordinate and influence teams without having direct reports.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is someone who has come up through the field as a glazing technician and has developed strong office/project support experience.
You understand how a project is supposed to work on paper, but more importantly, you understand what actually happens once the crew arrives on site.
