Job description

Position Scope

The Nuna Group of Companies is now accepting resumes for an  Project Operations Manager (internally known as an Operations Manager) with large earthworks construction projects experience. Nuna is the largest Inuit-owned heavy civil construction, earthworks and mine construction contractor in Canada. 

The Project Operations Manager, is accountable for directing the overall activities of multiple projects and company operational activities, as well as managing our Project Managers. Utilizing your leadership skills and experience in order to direct the work of others and make quick decisions. You must be well-organized and favor safety above everything else

Responsibilities

Safety, Environment and Training

  • Ensure that adequate safety and environmental standards, procedures and methods of work are being maintained consistently across all projects.
  • Participate in the development and subsequent updates of project specific risk matrix (safety and environmental)
  • Partners with Safety Manager and Training teams to develop and be accountable for adherence to Nuna specific operational training standards.
  • Mentor, train, coach, and hold project-based teams accountable to deliver and improve operational performance.
  • Ensure that Nuna and its workforce remain compliant with all Project, Provincial, Territorial, and Federal rules and regulations.
  • Responsible for engaging with Indigenous partners in support of Indigenous engagement and community development on projects.

Estimating, Budgeting and Execution Planning

  • Partners with Estimating teams on new project opportunities (bids) to ensure that the development of crews and fleet productivities of planned tasks and constructability thereof are aligned.
  • Review all new projects with the project team to explore and implement executional strategies that will improve on the planned targets/budgets, ensuring they are aware of and have the means to track against the baseline production KPI's for each task.
  • Ensures the necessary resources are in place to execute contracts on schedule.
  • Interface with clients frequently and effectively, managing the relationship and driving business development.

Operational Improvement

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of field level operational improvement strategies across all Nuna projects to positively impact efficiency and productivity.
  • Partners with Project Managers and Superintendents to drive continuous improvement and operational excellence as it relates to means and methods, construction ingenuity, scope management, and cost reduction for both Nuna and our clients.
  • Regular site visits to project-based procedure/practices are aligned with Nuna expectations.

Contract Management

  • Partners with Corporate Construction Manager and Project Managers in the development and understanding of projects budgets, forecasting, change management capture.
  • Support change management practices and provide intelligence for change orders preparation that may include also claims management.
  • Accountable for the development and utilization of DWOR across all projects.
  • Collaborates with Client, Project Managers and Superintendents in mitigation and analysis of change management impact.
  • In all cases, a collaborative approach must be taken with the with the Project Managers and Superintendents to execute the duties as listed above. While there may be instances that require deviation from the Nuna established processes and standard operating procedures, ultimate authority rests with the Project Operations Manager.  Deviations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Other related duties as required / directed.

Fleet Management

  • Partners with Fleet Management, site Project Manager's and Superintendents on the selection of equipment fleet required to execute the project work.
  • Partners with Fleet Management to reduce SMU equipment variance and equipment damage through propagation of fleet set up and best practice operational procedures across all projects.
Qualifications
  • Highly effective at translating business priorities into operating realities with a proven ability to work at all levels (with customers and internally) to execute operating plans without compromising safety and quality, while adhering to budget and schedule requirements.
  • Ability to understand and change an organization's culture.
  • Ability to create a safe, collaborative, and respectful working environment and culture.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Results-driven and strong ability to put structures in place.
  • Strong aptitude for schedule creation, adherence and project planning at resource and activities levels. P6 knowledge helpful.
  • Advanced computer skills with excellent knowledge of Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel) and exposure to JD Edwards and other reporting tools including Power BI and CUBE Safety system.
  • Acts with honesty and professionalism at the highest ethical standards.
  • Demonstrates a superior knowledge of company processes and applicable legislation.
  • Demonstrates organizational capabilities, superior attention to detail and good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to self-manage, handle multiple tasks, and take initiative.
  • Anticipates issues and implements solutions before problems occur and promotes continuous improvement.
  • Minimum ten (10) years' relevant experience working in a similar role.
  • Experience in Industrial construction and/or mining industry is strongly preferred.
  • Related 4-year Degree in Engineering or Business Management from a recognized institute is required.
  • Other related certification or equivalent work experience may also be accepted.
