Operations Management Internships information

What are Operations Management Internships?

Operations Management Internships are short-term, practical work experiences that allow students or recent graduates to gain hands-on exposure to the processes that keep organizations running efficiently. These internships typically involve assisting with process optimization, analyzing workflows, coordinating between departments, and supporting the implementation of operational strategies. Interns often learn about supply chain management, logistics, inventory control, and quality assurance. These experiences can help individuals build essential skills and gain industry knowledge, making them more competitive for future roles in operations management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Operations Management Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Operations Management Intern, you need strong analytical skills, basic understanding of supply chain concepts, and coursework in business or management. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems like SAP, and data analytics tools is typically expected. Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and a proactive attitude help interns stand out in dynamic operational environments. These skills and qualities are critical for supporting efficient processes, driving continuous improvement, and contributing meaningfully to team goals.

What are some typical projects or tasks an Operations Management Intern can expect to work on during their internship?

As an Operations Management Intern, you will typically be involved in projects that support process improvement, data analysis, and workflow optimization. Common tasks include collecting and analyzing operational data, assisting with supply chain management, participating in inventory control, and supporting the implementation of new procedures. You'll often collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as logistics, procurement, and production, gaining exposure to various aspects of operations. This hands-on experience not only builds practical skills but also provides valuable insight into the challenges and strategic decisions faced by operations teams.

Job description

SkyWater Technology is seeking two highly motivated summer interns to support a critical operational excellence initiative within our manufacturing organization. These interns will work directly with manufacturing leaders and the use of Artificial Intelligenceย  (AI) to modernize and improve over 200 existing Operation Instructions (OIs) used on the production floor.

The focus of this role is straightforward: take complex, text-heavy manufacturing specifications and make them clearer, more visual, and easier to train againstโ€”without sacrificing technical rigor. This work will directly impact training efficiency, operator effectiveness, and manufacturing flexibility.

This is not a theoretical exercise. The output will be used daily by production teams in a high-reliability manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and analyze existing manufacturing Operation Instructions and specifications

  • Partner with manufacturing engineers, supervisors, and operators to understand process intent and critical requirements

  • Simplify and restructure documentation to improve clarity, consistency, and usability

  • Convert written instructions into:

    • Visual work aids

    • Flowcharts

    • Step-by-step process summaries

  • Leverage approved AI tools to accelerate content restructuring and visualization (with human validation)

  • Ensure all updated documentation aligns with manufacturing standards, safety requirements, and quality expectations

  • Track progress across a large document set and meet defined project milestones

  • Deliver standardized, production-ready documentation at the conclusion of the internship

Required Qualifications
  • Completion of Junior year+ of bachelorโ€™sย degree in:

    • Engineering (Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical)

    • Operations Management

    • Technical Communication

    • Data/Systems Engineering or a related technical discipline

  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and simplify technical content

  • High attention to detail and respect for process discipline

  • Comfortable working in a structured manufacturing environment

  • Strong written communication skills

  • Ability to manage tasks independently and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with:

    • Manufacturing environments, labs, or production facilities

    • Process mapping or flowchart creation

    • Technical documentation or SOP development

  • Familiarity with AI tools for document analysis or content generation

  • Experience with visual tools (Visio, Lucidchart, PowerPoint, Miro, etc.)

  • Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement exposure

What This Internship Delivers
  • Hands-on experience improving real manufacturing systemsโ€”not academic exercises

  • Exposure to semiconductor manufacturing operations

  • Direct contribution to reducing training time and operational errors

  • Experience balancing modern AI tools with traditional manufacturing discipline

  • A tangible body of work that will remain in use after the internship ends

What Success Looks Like

By the end of the summer, interns will have:

  • Updated a significant portion of SkyWaterโ€™s Operation Instructions

  • Created standardized visual aids and flowcharts used on the production floor

  • Improved the clarity and consistency of training materials

  • Left the manufacturing team better equipped to train, cross-train, and execute efficiently
