Job Title: Executive Director

Department: Administration

FLSA: Exempt

Summary: The Executive Director is responsible for building a culture of Catholic Identity within the agency; serving as the face and primary relationship-builder of Catholic Charities throughout the Diocese of Allentown; as well as the implementation of the strategic plan, stewardship/development, fiscal management, and supervision of senior leadership of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Allentown.

This position requires a dynamic, genuine, and enthusiastic leader with a deep commitment to daily prayer, Catholic spirituality and liturgy, and Catholic Moral and Social Teaching. A strong background in major donor cultivation and fundraising, authentic community relationship-building, and organizational leadership is required. The Executive Director leads at the strategic level, empowering a skilled management team to execute day-to-day operations, while personally cultivating relationships, inspiring staff, and raising the profile of Catholic Charities throughout the Diocese of Allentown and its communities.

Reporting Relationships: The Executive Director reports to the Catholic Charities' Board of Directors and Secretary for Catholic Health, Human Services, and Youth Protection of the Diocese of Allentown. Direct reports include the Director of Operations, Director of Community Support Services, Supervisor of Counseling Services, and the Director of Finance.

Responsibilities: The Executive Director is responsible for strategic direction, major donor cultivation, fiscal oversight, and for implementing all policy decisions of the governing Board. The Executive Director is the face of Catholic Charities in the community - a highly visible relationship-builder, advocate for services to the disadvantaged, and spokesperson who raises the profile of CC Allentown throughout the Diocese. The Executive Director provides effective leadership of all fund development efforts, builds strong relationships with key stakeholders and major donors, and promotes close working relationships with the Diocese of Allentown and its parishes.

Specifically, the Executive Director:

  • Ensures that, in partnership with the governing Board, the mission and vision of CC Allentown are conducted effectively, efficiently, consistently, and collaboratively.
  • Works collaboratively with the Diocese of Allentown's Secretariat for Stewardship and Development, Board members and fund development staff to identify, cultivate and solicit donors and funding partners in support of the programs of CC Allentown. Is capable of persuasively articulating to donors and community leaders the importance of the services of Catholic Charities. Ideally, has a history of success in capital campaigns, working with donors, foundations, corporations, and local government. Understands planned giving and is able to cultivate long-term relationships with major donors that inspire capital gifts and gifts to endowment.
  • Demonstrates the financial literacy necessary to understand and clearly communicate the organization's financial position to the Board, donors, and community stakeholders; partners closely with the Board's finance committee and corporate accountant in the development and oversight of budgets and expenditures; and brings sufficient business acumen to recognize financial risk, ask the right questions, and support sound decision-making in service of the long-term wellbeing of the organization.
  • Anticipates changing community needs with vision and imagination, initiates long-range strategic and operational planning, and is responsible and accountable for implementation of all such plans.
  • Determines the feasibility of new and current programs, as well as the community impact.
  • Oversees the administrative functions of CC Allentown by recruiting, training, supervising, and delegating day-to-day operational responsibilities to a skilled and dedicated management team; builds trust with staff through clear communication, empowerment, and accountability; and provides strategic leadership that enables the organization to operate effectively and with cohesion at every level.
  • Represents CC Allentown to local and state government, numerous community stakeholders, groups of associations and agencies, and the media. Works closely in partnership with city and county governments, in optimizing the extent to which CC Allentown can deliver services to the poor in line with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Builds positive partnerships, in close collaboration with the Board, with the Diocese and parishes, as well as the elected and appointed political leadership of the region served, and other nonprofit organizations. Represents the Diocese of Allentown on various committees as required.
  • Actively raises the profile of Catholic Charities throughout the Diocese of Allentown by cultivating genuine relationships with donors, community leaders, parish communities, and other stakeholders; serves as an enthusiastic and credible ambassador for the mission and values of CC Allentown.

Exceptional ability to cultivate authentic community relationships and expand CC's network of goodwill and support throughout the Diocese of Allentown.
  • Exceptional ability to become a highly visible advocate and spokesperson throughout the community for the disadvantaged. Experience in developing, leading, and implementing strategic planning.
  • Experience in developing and adapting community-based programs responsive to local needs, with career achievements evidencing business acumen, entrepreneurship, openness to change, ability to take calculated risks, and financial discipline. Commitment to understanding dissenting views, to building consensus, to analyze options fairly, and then to be able to be pragmatic and decisive. Demonstrated flexibility, independence of vision, creativity, expertise, groundedness, and leadership ability to inform and influence Board members as to desirable options and changes in established goals and objectives.
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships with staff, to identify and recruit able new staff, and to motivate, mentor, and inspire an effective professional workforce. A collaborative, trust-building leader who delegates operational responsibility with clarity and confidence, empowering staff to perform at their best; able to communicate and model performance expectations, hold staff accountable, manage conflict fairly, reward successful performance, and address underperformance decisively and with empathy; the ability to create a congenial and productive work environment.
  • Exceptional listening, communication, and collaboration skills; centeredness, maturity, authenticity, high energy; a healthy sense of humor and a mature perspective on the human condition.

Education

Master's degree preferred in a discipline relevant to nonprofit executive leadership, such as Business Administration (MBA), Public Administration (MPA), Nonprofit Management, Organizational Leadership, Social Work Administration, Human Services Administration, Public Policy, Philanthropy/Fundraising, Finance, or a related field; equivalent senior-level experience may be considered. A minimum of 5 years of senior leadership experience in a nonprofit organization, with increasing responsibility over time, is preferred.
