Job description

Position Summary

The Metals Logistics / Traffic Coordinator Intern is responsible forplanning, scheduling, and executing the movement of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap materials, finished metal products, and related commodities. This position coordinates truck, rail, container, and broker activity to ensure material is moved safely, cost-effectively, and on schedule whilemaintainingaccurateshipmentrecords.The coordinator serves as the primary liaison between traders, suppliers, transportation providers, yard operations, customers, and accounting to maximize freight efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and support commercialobjectives.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Logistics& Transportation Management
  • Schedule inbound and outbound shipments of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
  • Coordinate truck, rail, container, and intermodal shipments.
  • Secure freight rates and transportation capacity frominternal/externalcarriers and brokers.
  • Optimizefreight routing to minimize transportation costs and transit times.
  • Track shipments and proactively resolve delays, service failures, or scheduling conflicts.
  • Maintain carrier performance metrics including on-time delivery and cost effectiveness.

Traffic Coordination

    • Issue shipping instructions and coordinate pickup and delivery appointments.
    • Communicate daily shipment schedules to operations, traders, suppliers, and customers.
    • Monitor carrier arrivals and departures to ensure efficient yard flow.
    • Verify weights, scale tickets, bills of lading, and shipping documentation.
    • Ensure all loadscomply withDOT, environmental, and company safety requirements.

Inventory & Documentation

      • Enter, track,andmaintainscheduling andshipment records withinCROW/RIMAS.
      • Reconcile shipping documents, invoices, and freight bills.
      • Accountable forinventory movements across yards, processing facilities, and customer locations.
      • Maintainaccuraterecords ofreceived/shippedmaterial grades, weights, and destinations.
      • Prepare weeklylogisticsreportsofscheduled and shipped orders.

Carrier & Vendor Management

        • Develop andmaintainrelationships with trucking companies, railroads, brokers, and third-partylogisticsproviders.
        • Negotiate freight rates and service agreements when authorized.
        • Monitor carrier performance and recommend changes to improve service levels.
        • Assist in developing contingency transportation plans during market disruptions or service interruptions.

Commercial Support

Work closely with traders and commercial teams to ensure freight economicsalignwith trading margins.

  • Qualifications
    • Associate'sorBachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business, Transportation, or related field preferred.
    • Equivalent industry experience may be substituted for formal education.

Experience

      • Prior experience inlogistics, traffic, transportation, or supply chain coordination. 2yrs plus preferred
      • Experience inmetalsrecycling, scrap, steel, manufacturing, commodities, or bulk materials preferred.
      • Experience coordinating truck and rail shipments is highly desirable.
      • Familiarity with exportlogistics and container shipping is a plus.

Strong understanding of:

        • Truckload and LTL freight
        • Raillogistics
        • Freight brokerage and carrier management
        • Bills ofladingand shipping documentation
        • DOT transportation regulations

Proficient with:

          • Microsoft Excel
          • Transportation Management Systems (TMS)
          • Inventory and shipment tracking software
