What does an operational risk manager do?

An operational risk manager works to identify and limit the risk associated with a company’s operations. As an operational risk manager, your responsibilities involve assessing business operations, identifying issues, and creating reports on your findings. You then help develop policies and implement changes to lessen operational risks. Other duties include continually monitoring the business to find potential new threats and ensuring company compliance with laws and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an operational risk manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Operational Risk Manager, you need a solid understanding of risk assessment, regulatory compliance, and internal controls, typically supported by a degree in finance, business, or a related field. Familiarity with risk management frameworks, GRC (governance, risk, and compliance) systems, and certifications such as FRM or ORM are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for identifying, mitigating, and communicating operational risks, ensuring organizational stability and regulatory adherence.

What are some common challenges faced by operational risk managers in maintaining effective risk controls across different departments?

Operational Risk Managers often encounter challenges in ensuring consistent risk controls due to varying processes, priorities, and risk appetites across departments. Communication gaps and resistance to change can make it difficult to implement standardized procedures. Successfully overcoming these challenges involves building strong cross-functional relationships, conducting regular training, and fostering a risk-aware culture to ensure alignment on risk management practices throughout the organization.

Job description

About the Opportunity

We are building a Revenue Operations function from the ground up inside our EHS & ESG business unit which sells into Fortune 500 companies managing environmental and social regulatory reporting, process safety and operational risk, and environmental health exposure. This role is the analytical backbone of that function: the person who turns scattered, inconsistent reporting into a single source of truth for how the go-to-market engine is performing.

Today, sales performance reporting is managed independently across Sales leaders using their own spreadsheets and definitions, territories and quotas are set without a consistent data-driven methodology, and CRM data quality gaps missing account hierarchy, duplicate records, incomplete fields undermine trust in the numbers. This role owns fixing that: building the reporting infrastructure, cadence, and data stewardship practices the business needs to manage revenue with confidence. If you enjoy bringing order and rigor to ambiguous, high-visibility problems, this role is for you.

What You Will Own
Sales Performance Reporting & Cadence
  • Build and maintain a single source of truth for sales performance reporting, replacing today's fragmented, individually managed reporting with a consistent, trusted view.
  • Design and run the recurring revenue performance cadence pipeline, forecast, and bookings reviews in partnership with Sales leadership.
  • Develop dashboards and reporting aligned to the Lead-to-Revenue (L2R) KPI framework, supporting consistent, metric-driven decision-making across the go-to-market team.
Territory & Quota Analytics
  • Support territory design and account segmentation with a data-driven methodology, replacing ad hoc, inconsistently applied approaches.
  • Support quota-setting analysis grounded in market potential, account coverage, and historical performance data.
Data Stewardship & CRM Quality
  • Own day-to-day data quality standards for the CRM account hierarchy integrity, duplicate resolution, and field completeness in partnership with Central IT and Divisional Operations.
  • Support account hierarchy implementation and enrichment tool adoption to close gaps in ICP and account-level data.
  • Maintain data stewardship practices aligned to the L2R framework so downstream reporting and forecasting can be trusted.
Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Partner closely with the RevOps Managers owning Top-of-Funnel and Pipeline-to-Bookings, the Sales Enablement Manager, and Divisional Sales Operations to keep reporting, data, and process aligned across the funnel.
  • Act as a trusted analytical partner to Sales leadership, surfacing insights that inform territory, quota, and pipeline decisions.
What You Bring
Required
  • 2 + years of experience in sales operations, revenue operations, or a similar analytical role supporting a B2B sales organization.
  • Hands-on proficiency with Salesforce or a comparable CRM, including report and dashboard building.
  • Strong Excel/analytics skills, with experience in a BI tool (e.g., Power BI) for reporting and data visualization.
  • A demonstrated ability to bring structure to ambiguous problems and to build trusted, repeatable reporting processes from scratch.
  • Clear, confident communication comfortable presenting data and insights directly to Sales leadership.
Preferred
  • Experience supporting a complex, multi-stakeholder B2B enterprise sales motion.
  • Exposure to EHS, ESG, or another regulated, technically complex industry.
  • Familiarity with Clari, LeanData, or Salesforce CPQ.
  • Experience supporting territory design or quota-setting methodology.
