Job description

About the Job:

The Operations Manager is responsible for leading the daily execution of waste hauling services with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. This role oversees all field operations, including driver management, routing, equipment maintenance, and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The successful candidate will drive both short- and long-term operational strategies that support profitable growth, superior service delivery, and environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Champion a safety-first culture by ensuring compliance with all company, DOT, and environmental health and safety regulations. Conduct regular training, audits, and site assessments.
  • Oversee dispatch and routing operations to ensure timely, cost-effective, and compliant pickup and disposal of waste streams.
  • Manage and optimize fleet operations, including preventative maintenance schedules, equipment availability, and repair coordination.
  • Lead and develop a team of drivers, technicians, and support staff; ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and performance expectations.
  • Collaborate with Branch and Regional Leadership to execute operational goals, meet Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and resolve service issues.
  • Monitor hauling and disposal costs, fuel usage, and labor efficiency to drive continuous improvement and margin growth.
  • Oversee accurate inventory and utilization of containers, trucks, and other mobile assets.
  • Lead operational assessments and drive action plans for performance gaps in safety, service delivery, route optimization and cost control.
  • Ensure proper waste manifesting, documentation, and compliance tracking for all regulated materials.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent work experience in operations or logistics will be considered.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience in transportation, logistics, or environmental services—waste hauling or related industry preferred.
  • Demonstrated success managing field teams, routing, and fleet logistics in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and EPA regulations and best practices.
  • Financial acumen with experience managing budgets, cost controls, and operational KPIs.
  • Strong leadership and people development skills with a focus on safety and performance.
  • Experience with CRM and operational systems (NetSuite, routing software, TMS, etc.) and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to adapt quickly and solve complex problems in a regulated, customer-driven environment.
  • Comfortable working in a matrixed organization with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
