What is an operations manager?

Operations Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a business or organization. They ensure that business processes run efficiently, manage staff, and implement policies to improve productivity and quality. Operations Managers often coordinate between different departments, handle budgeting, and work to streamline workflows. Their goal is to optimize organizational performance while maintaining high standards of service or product delivery.

How does an operations manager typically collaborate with other departments to ensure smooth business processes?

Operations Managers play a central role in coordinating activities across multiple departments such as finance, HR, and production to streamline business operations. They often facilitate communication between teams, identify process bottlenecks, and implement solutions to improve efficiency. Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
The S&OP / Inventory Health Intern will support the Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) team in the areas of inventory analysis, data validation, reporting, and process documentation. This role will partner closely with the Senior S&OP Planner to help drive visibility into inventory health across the distribution network, support brand-level and DC-level deep dives, and contribute to ongoing continuous improvement initiatives.
The intern will gain hands-on experience with advanced planning tools (Logility, D365), analytics platforms (Power BI, Claude), and cross-functional collaboration with Demand Planning, Supply Planning, Category, and Operations teams. This role supports the S&OP process but does not own final demand, supply, or inventory decisions.
U.S. Venture's Internship Program runs May - August. Dates may vary based on individual class schedules. This position is located at our Corporate Office in Appleton, WI.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Inventory Health & Analysis
• Support weekly and monthly inventory health reviews across the DC network (Healthy / Watch / At-Risk / Critical categorization).
• Assist in pulling, cleaning, and validating Logility planning attribute snapshots and Power BI data extracts.
• Conduct brand-level and SKU-level inventory deep dives (ABC/XYZ segmentation, service level targets vs. actuals).
• Help identify root causes of inventory imbalances and document findings for the Senior S&OP Planner's review.
Reporting & Data Support
• Support development and maintenance of S&OP KPI scorecards (OTIF, service level, fill rate, inventory turns, forecast accuracy).
• Assist in preparing recurring reporting packages for bi-weekly S&OP check-ins and Executive S&OP forums.
• Compile data for warehouse capacity-constrained sites, receiving backlogs, and past-due PO exposure.
• Support validation of new reports built by the ISA / DNA team.
Process Documentation & Continuous Improvement
• Help clean up and standardize SOPs for planning processes (delete record process, low volume process, buy-to-backorder logic, etc.).
• Support the SKU rationalization initiative through data gathering and item-level review.
• Assist with maintenance of global filters and inventory parameters in Logility.
• Contribute ideas for process improvements and automation opportunities.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Partner with Demand Planners, Supply Planners, Category Managers, and Replenishment Analysts on ad-hoc analysis.
• Participate in S&OP process meetings (demand review, supply review, inventory reconciliation) to build understanding of the end-to-end process.
• Support special projects tied to the Chainsight, Logility, and inventory optimization roadmap.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Analytics, Data Science, Operations, or a related field.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, basic formulas) and PowerPoint.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and work both independently and cross-functionally.
Preferred
• Coursework or prior internship experience in supply chain, inventory management, or data analytics.
• Exposure to Power BI, SQL, or advanced planning tools (Logility, SAP, Oracle, D365).
• Interest in pursuing a career in supply chain planning, S&OP, or analytics.
