The Polar Buddies Leader is responsible for working in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of West Central Ohio to recruit Ada area students, grades K-8th, in this mentoring program with ONU Students. The position entails a varying number of hours throughout the year depending on the activities scheduled. A higher amount is required especially at the beginning of the academic year and will include some evenings and weekends. Since the bulk of the work falls during fall semester, a greater time commitment is expected then. The Polar Buddies Leader will work under the supervision of the Religious and Spiritual Life Advisor and serve as a member of the Religious and Spiritual Life Staff. They must be committed to the Religious and Spiritual Life program and demonstrate support by assisting other staff members. These non-work study positions require a commitment for the entire academic year.
Principal Responsibilities
  • Assist BBBS in coordinating the Polar Buddies Program with the Ada elementary school principal and the Polar Buddies student employee.
  • Publicize the program and recruit ONU students to participate.
  • Screen ONU students and match appropriate mentor with Ada students, ensuring the best match based on each individual Ada student application prioritizing applications in order of their receipt when possible.
  • Recruit ONU Students as Bigs for the program through advertisements at Welcome Fest and on campus advertising.
  • Follow up monthly with each pair (ONU/Ada) to be sure expectations are being met and appointments are being kept.
  • Plan semesterly events with BBBS during the academic year for all Polar Buddies, whether they are in person or virtual.
  • Assist BBBS in hosting a monthly group gathering at the Ada Public Schools for Bigs and Littles
  • Send event invitations out at least two weeks in advance.
  • Assist in problem solving within the matches.
  • Keep the Administrative Assistant updated on all new Bigs so background checks can be initiated through the Human Resource office. Encourage Bigs to complete the online tool quickly and follow up when notified they have not completed the background check. Work within the Polar Buddies budget.

  • Must be enrolled as an ONU student
  • Committed to assisting with weekly Spiritual Hour activities on Thursdays at 11 am
  • Available to attend weekly Religious and Spiritual Life Staff meetings
  • Available to attend Fall & Spring Planning Retreats
  • Support Religious and Spiritual Life sponsored events
