How much do online vet jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 10, 2026, the average yearly pay for online vet in the United States is $189,657.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $176,500.00 and $219,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online vet?

To thrive as an Online Vet, you need a veterinary degree (DVM or equivalent), active veterinary licensure, and strong diagnostic skills. Familiarity with telemedicine platforms, electronic medical records, and remote diagnostic tools is typically required. Excellent communication, empathy, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for building trust and conveying information clearly to pet owners in a virtual setting. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure accurate assessments, effective care, and positive client experiences in remote veterinary practice.

What is an online vet?

Online vets are licensed veterinarians who provide veterinary advice, consultations, and guidance through digital platforms such as video calls, chat, or email. They help pet owners address health concerns, behavioral issues, and general care questions without needing an in-person visit, although they may recommend an in-clinic appointment for serious or emergency cases. Online vets can offer convenience, quick answers, and support for non-urgent issues, making pet care more accessible.

What is the difference between Online Vet vs Veterinary Technician?

AspectOnline VetVeterinary Technician
CredentialsLicensed Veterinarian (DVM or VMD)Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
Work EnvironmentOnline consultations, telemedicine platformsAnimal clinics, hospitals, laboratories
Industry UsageProviding remote veterinary advice and diagnosisAssisting veterinarians in clinical tasks and animal care

Online Vets are licensed veterinarians offering remote consultations via telemedicine, while Veterinary Technicians support veterinarians in clinical settings. Both roles require specific credentials, but Online Vets focus on virtual care, whereas Veterinary Technicians work directly with animals in physical environments.

How do online vets typically collaborate with in-person veterinary clinics to ensure comprehensive pet care?

Online vets often work closely with local veterinary clinics to provide follow-up care and facilitate in-person diagnostics or treatments that cannot be completed virtually. They may refer pet owners to specific clinics for exams, lab tests, or procedures, and coordinate by sharing patient notes, medical histories, and recommendations. This collaborative approach helps ensure pets receive timely and holistic care, bridging the gap between virtual consultations and hands-on veterinary services. As an online vet, you'll frequently communicate with clinic staff and may help pet owners navigate the next steps after an online appointment.
