Job Summary
The Billing Verification Specialist is responsible for the daily verification of all patient demographics and
insurance for ambulance runs to be able to submit for coding of call and insurance or patient submission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Verify the type of call that you are working on. You must know if the call is a 911 call from home,
motor vehicle accident (MVA), workman's comp, hospice, hospital DRG, etc.
Verify all patient information including name, date of birth, address, social security, patient
signature.
Verify patient insurance information if provided. If not provided, search necessary data bases.
Check all scripts/ECIN for any missing or needed information.
Make any needed calls to patients, facilities or patient family members to obtain needed
information not provided.
Must verify Medicare Part A stays for all patients in skilled nursing facilities.
Move call to "ready to code" once all of the above information has been verified.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
High School diploma or GED
2+ years' experience as a coder
Strong computer skills
Data Entry skills
CAC - Certified Ambulance Coder, preferred but not required
Strong attention to detail
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
Able to multi-task and meet tight deadlines
Ability to decipher information from the CMS coding guidelines and apply the accurate
information to patient information
Strong grammar skills and/or the ability to check all work online
Driven to accomplish assigned tasks
Self-starter; requires minimal supervision
Excellent communication skills (including verbal and written)
Strong organizational abilities

Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Physical: Normally assigned to work in an office environment, where there is minimal exposure to dust,
dirt, noise, and the like. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time (90% of the work day).
Occasionally stands to operate copy and fax machines.
Visual Activity: Able to see and to discriminate detail in written documents and messages from a
computer screen.
Auditory Activity: Good skills to distinguish sounds like normal conversation levels.
Sensory Activity: Normal motor skills required, such as being able to type on a computer keyboard and
to drive an automobile.
Verbal Activity: Ability to communicate clearly with a wide variety of employees and patients, families,
co-workers.
Work from Home: This position does allow for a "work from home" option. In order to work from
home you must have a designated workspace
Work from Home Eligible: Yes with Approval
Work from home approval will be granted when an employee demonstrates the following:
Proper phone, computer, internet connection and designated workspace free from noise and
interruptions.
Successful achievement of productivity and quality goals.
Written approval and schedule from Billing Manager. Any deviation from approved work from
home schedule must be pre-arranged in advance
