Their work can include tasks such as color correction, removing blemishes, adjusting lighting, retouching skin, and editing backgrounds. They often use specialized software like Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom to achieve high-quality results for purposes such as e-commerce, fashion, portraits, or marketing. Online photo retouchers typically communicate with clients remotely and deliver the finished images electronically. This role requires both technical skills and a strong eye for detail to meet each client's specific needs.

What does an online photo retoucher do?

An online photo retoucher works with a digital image to make corrections and enhance the appearance of photographs. You use software such a Bridge, Adobe Photoshop, or other photo editing software to edit and retouch as necessary. You may work one-on-one with clients to determine and manage expectations and desired outcomes. Many online photo retouchers are freelancers and must market themselves and advertise to secure work. Some positions require you to take pictures or find them royalty-free online as part of your routine duties. Other responsibilities vary by job, with some employers requiring you process only a few images per day, while others may require hundreds.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online photo retoucher?

  • Ensure color consistency across product collections.
  • Receive creative direction from Photographer, Studio Manager, Sr Color Manager and Creative Director, and implement any changes necessary.

  • Maintain digital asset file organization, naming conventions, color space, crop, file size and other technical specifications.
  • Production of consistent, quality results in a timely manner. Maintain a high volume of image output daily, and within rigorous deadlines.
  • On-set quality assurance and color expert as needed.
  • Transport materials and equipment and lift, move, and carry objects up to 50 pounds on a limited basis.

Criteria

  • 7+ years of experience in high-volume retouching in studio setting or in-house creative department, focusing on food, high-end furnishings or luxury goods required.
  • 2+ years of people management experience

  • Understanding of color management workflows and catalog pre-press experience a plus.

  • Bachelor's degree in photography, graphic design, fine arts or related field preferred; portfolio with before-after examples.

  • Experience communicating clearly and effectively with diverse personalities and communication styles in a fast-paced environment
