Jewelry retouching focuses on detailed enhancements like removing imperfections, adjusting reflections, and refining jewelry images to achieve a polished look. What is jewelry retouching?

Jewelry retouching is the process of digitally enhancing photographs of jewelry to improve their visual appeal and accurately represent the product. This involves tasks such as removing dust, scratches, and reflections, adjusting color and brightness, enhancing shine, and refining details to make the jewelry look its best. Jewelry retouching is commonly used in e-commerce, catalogs, and advertising to ensure that jewelry pieces look flawless and attractive to potential buyers.

What are some common challenges faced in jewelry retouching, and how can they be addressed?

Jewelry retouching professionals often encounter challenges such as removing dust, scratches, or reflections from highly reflective surfaces while maintaining the natural look and intricate details of each piece. Achieving consistent color correction and realistic shine without over-editing can also be tricky. These challenges are typically addressed by using advanced Photoshop techniques, working with high-resolution images, and maintaining close communication with photographers or art directors to understand the desired outcome. Developing a keen eye for detail and staying updated on industry-standard retouching tools will help overcome these common obstacles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Jewelry Retoucher, and why are they important?

To excel as a Jewelry Retoucher, you need expertise in photo editing, color correction, and digital imaging, often supported by experience or formal training in graphic design or photography. Mastery of Adobe Photoshop and familiarity with digital asset management systems are typically required. Attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to collaborate with photographers and clients are crucial soft skills. These abilities ensure high-quality, visually appealing images that accurately represent jewelry products and enhance brand reputation.

Job description

Reports to: Creative Director

Department: Creative

Classification: Temporary or 1099

WHO WE ARE:

Thesis is a digital agency building an AI-powered image production engine for a global consumer brand. Our pipeline uses generative AI tools to produce product images—featuring products shown on-model and in lifestyle or studio-style scenes—at a scale that traditional photography cannot match.

THE JOB:

We're looking for a skilled Product Retoucher who can take AI-generated output and bring it to publish-ready quality, addressing product detail accuracy, lighting consistency, and compositional issues.

This is a temporary or independent contractor (1099) position working directly within our production team.

AS A PERSON, YOU HAVE:
  • Retouching Excellence: Demonstrated expertise in high-end product retouching, including color correction, image cleanup, compositing, masking, artifact removal, and detail enhancement while preserving product integrity.

  • Creative Execution: Capable of independently translating creative direction and client feedback into polished, production-ready imagery that supports brand and business objectives.

  • Technical Proficiency: Highly skilled in Adobe Creative Suite and Figma, with advanced expertise in Photoshop and a strong understanding of digital asset management systems and production workflows.

  • AI Image Retouching: Experience working with AI-generated imagery, including correcting visual artifacts, blended elements, distorted anatomy, inaccurate product details, and compositional inconsistencies.

  • Color Accuracy & Quality Control: Strong understanding of color management, calibration, and maintaining consistency across various platforms and outputs.

  • Brand Alignment: Able to execute retouching solutions that align with established visual standards while adapting to the unique needs of different products, campaigns, and client requirements.

  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Experienced in partnering with photographers, designers, art directors, creative leadership, production teams, and account stakeholders to ensure seamless project execution.

  • Attention to Detail: Exceptional eye for detail, accuracy, and craftsmanship, consistently delivering precise, high-quality imagery with minimal errors.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
  • Retouch AI-generated on-model lifestyle and product images to a client-ready standard.

  • Address skin texture, fine details, and anatomical naturalism introduced or altered by AI generation.

  • Fix distorted details, pseudo-text, and aliasing artifacts.

  • Refine lighting, shadow consistency, and background seamlessness.

  • Work from structured client feedback delivered via Airtable (text notes and annotated references).

  • Deliver layered PSDs, JPGs, and PNGs per agreed naming and file conventions.

  • Communicate clearly on scope, revision estimates, and any image-level issues flagged for escalation.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 5+ years of professional retouching experience, preferably within an agency, studio, retailer, e-commerce environment, or corporate creative department.

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in product retouching, skin retouching, color correction, compositing, and image enhancement across multiple product categories.

  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and professional retouching workflows.

  • Experience retouching premium hard goods, jewelry, luxury items, fashion, or other detail-intensive product imagery is strongly preferred.

  • Experience managing high-volume asset production while maintaining exceptional quality standards.

  • Comfortable working with AI-generated source material and resolving common image-generation inconsistencies.

  • Comfortable working independently within fast-paced creative and production environments.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The following capabilities are required in order to perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations that do not create an undue burden on the agency are available to address the following requirements.

  • Using standard office equipment, computers, and related technology.

  • Certain activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.

  • Bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds.

  • No travel is anticipated for this role.

RELATIONSHIPS:

This role reports to the Creative Director or Associate Creative Director.

VALUES:
  • Be Lean, Take Action: We believe in thinking big, rolling up our sleeves, and getting the job done. And while we love a good plan, we believe in using process as an engine, not a brake.

  • Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say: We’re all here to learn, grow, and evolve together, which requires connecting, conflicting, and embracing. Honesty and ideas are welcome; ego is not.

  • Show Up Fully: We invite you to bring your whole self to work — your perspective, cultural background, lived experiences — while creating room for others’ strengths to complement your own. What makes you remarkable is welcome at Thesis.

INCLUSION AND ENCOURAGEMENT:

We know that experience can show up in many ways, and we encourage you to apply even if you don't meet 100% of the qualifications. If you're passionate about strategy, eager to grow, and excited to contribute your perspective, we'd love to hear from you.

At Thesis, we believe the best ideas come from bringing together diverse voices, experiences, and ways of thinking. Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are not checkboxes—they are essential to how we work, collaborate, and create. We are committed to fostering an environment where all employees can thrive and where every individual is treated with respect and dignity.

Thesis is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. We provide reasonable accommodations throughout the hiring process for applicants with disabilities. If you require an accommodation, please contact Human Resources at HR@Thesis.Agency.

As part of our commitment to equitable hiring practices, we do not request or consider applicants' salary history when making hiring decisions.
