As of Aug 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for online optometry in Virginia is $18.41, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.48 and $19.33 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is online optometry?

Online optometry refers to the delivery of eye care services, such as vision tests, consultations, and prescription renewals, through digital platforms. These services allow patients to connect with licensed optometrists remotely using video calls, online assessments, and digital tools. While online optometry can be convenient for routine vision care and follow-ups, it does not fully replace comprehensive in-person eye exams, which are necessary for detecting certain eye diseases and conditions. Online optometry can be a helpful supplement, especially for those with limited access to traditional eye care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online optometrist?

To thrive as an Online Optometrist, you need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, state licensure, and a thorough understanding of ocular health and vision science. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, digital diagnostic tools, and secure electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential. Exceptional communication, patient empathy, and adaptability set outstanding online optometrists apart. These skills ensure accurate remote patient care, foster trust, and allow for effective diagnosis and management in a virtual environment.

What are some common challenges online optometrists might face when providing virtual eye care?

Online optometrists often encounter challenges such as accurately assessing certain eye conditions that require in-person examination or specialized equipment. Communicating clearly with patients through digital platforms and ensuring patients follow self-administered tests properly can also be difficult. Additionally, managing patients' expectations about what can and cannot be achieved during a virtual visit is crucial. However, strong communication skills, familiarity with telehealth platforms, and a collaborative approach with in-person clinics can help overcome these obstacles.
