Location: Primarily Main Campus but potentially any other college location as assigned.
SUMMARY
The Adult Education Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality instruction and support to adult learners seeking to earn a GED credential and/or transition into postsecondary education or career pathways. This position delivers GED instruction in core academic areas, including basic literacy and math through high school equivalency, writing, science, and social studies, while also facilitating the AOK program, which integrates adult education, workforce preparation, and career pathway navigation. The instructor plays a critical role in student persistence, skill attainment, and successful transitions to employment or further education. They will ensure compliance with all aspects of adult education as required by the Adult and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA), the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR), and Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC). Instruction will include adult students, 16 years of age and older, at all academic levels.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
GED Instruction

  • Provide instructional services in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies aligned with GED standards and the Kansas Board of Regents. 
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that address diverse learning styles and skill levels to ensure every student makes adequate progress related to their learning goals.
  • Utilize formative and summative assessments, including GED Ready practice tests, to monitor student progress and guide instruction.
  • Integrate digital literacy, employability skills, and academic rigor into classroom instruction.
  • Maintain accurate student records, attendance, assessments, and progress data in the LACES Student Information System.
  • Support students in goal setting, test readiness, and persistence toward GED completion by advising students during enrollment and minimally every three weeks thereafter.  
  • Engage in staff development activities with other adult education staff, both within and outside of KCKCC, during the academic year to enhance the quality of instruction, meeting the required number of PD hours set by KCKCC Adult Education. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director/Director.

Accelerating Opportunities Kansas (AOK) Facilitation

  • Facilitate the AOK program by supporting students wishing to enroll in approved AO-K career pathway programs.
  • Collaborate with workforce, postsecondary, and community partners to support student transitions to training and employment.
  • Assist students with career exploration, postsecondary planning, and workforce readiness activities.
  • Monitor and document AOK participant outcomes, including measurable skill gains, credential attainment, and transitions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • High energy, self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to create and implement effective lesson plans.
  • Ability to create and maintain a student-centered classroom.
  • Ability to demonstrate classroom management skills.
  • Ability to work with multi-level adult learners.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software, online resources, and classroom technology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in education, adult education, or related field. 
  • Training, experience, and/or coursework in individual learning methodology in basic academic skill areas, including reading, writing, and mathematics, to improve learner academic skills.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and data management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and partner organizations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in education, adult education, or related field.
  • Teaching experience, especially K-12. 
  • Experience with Accelerating Opportunities Kansas or integrated education and training (IET) models.
  • Coaching and instructing Adult Education/Adult Learners. 
  • Experience teaching high school equivalency skills to adult learners, preferably GED preparation.

WORKING CONDITIONS

WORK SCHEDULE
