What is an online ESL instructor?

Online ESL (English as a Second Language) Instructors are educators who teach English to non-native speakers over the internet. They use digital platforms to deliver lessons, interact with students, and provide feedback, often to learners from different countries and backgrounds. These instructors may work for language schools, online education companies, or as independent tutors. Their primary goal is to improve students' English language skills in areas such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an online ESL instructor?

To thrive as an Online ESL Instructor, you need a solid understanding of English grammar, language teaching methodologies, and often a bachelor's degree or TEFL/TESOL certification. Instructors also provide regular feedback and adjust lesson plans based on student progress, helping to keep learners motivated and involved. Building rapport and fostering a supportive atmosphere are key strategies for maintaining engagement in a remote setting.

Part-Time ESL Instructor - Fall Semester
A CEA-accredited ESL school serving adult international and domestic students is seeking a part-time ESL instructor for the Fall semester. This is an on-site teaching position with approximately 5-10 teaching hours per week, depending on enrollment, qualifications, and availability.
We are looking for an organized, energetic, and culturally sensitive instructor who enjoys working with adult English-language learners and contributing to a collaborative academic environment.
Potential Teaching Schedule
Classes may be available during the following scheduled blocks:
  • Daytime: Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • Evening: Monday and Thursday, 4:15 p.m.-9:45 p.m.

Each full teaching day consists of five instructional hours with two 15-minute breaks. Applicants may be considered for daytime classes, evening classes, or a combination based on availability and program needs. The schedule is planned in advance and generally remains consistent throughout the semester.
The position may be renewed for future semesters based on enrollment, performance, and scheduling needs.
The school provides an established curriculum, instructional materials, and assessments, allowing instructors to focus primarily on effective teaching and student engagement rather than developing courses from the beginning.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher
  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language; experience with adult learners is strongly preferred
  • TESOL, TEFL, TESL, CELTA, DELTA, or a comparable credential, or current enrollment in a related certification or degree program
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong organizational and classroom-management skills
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Basic proficiency with computers, email, Microsoft Office, or equivalent applications

Candidates pursuing or holding a degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Education, Second Language Acquisition, or a closely related field are encouraged to apply.
Compensation is commensurate with education and relevant teaching experience.
This is an on-site position and cannot be performed remotely
To Apply
Please submit your resume and indicate your availability for daytime and/or evening classes. Qualified applicants will be contacted regarding the next steps in the interview process.
Compensation: $23.00 - $30.00 per hour
