What is an online counselor?

Online counselors are trained mental health professionals who provide counseling and support services through digital platforms, such as video calls, chat, or email. They help individuals work through personal, emotional, or psychological issues remotely, offering the same confidentiality and ethical standards as in-person therapy. Online counseling can be more convenient and accessible for people who have busy schedules, live in remote areas, or prefer privacy.

What does an online counselor do?

An online counselor provides therapy and mental health support services online via email, chat, and video. As an online counselor, you connect with clients through existing online therapy websites or mobile apps. Alternatively, you can set up your own private online therapy practice and market your services directly to potential clients. Similar to traditional face-to-face therapy, you offer online sessions to clients during the timeframe that suits your schedule. The benefits of being an online counselor are that you do not have to pay the overhead costs of renting an office space, and you avoid having to commute to work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Online Counselor, you need a background in psychology or counseling, relevant licensure, and strong client assessment skills. Familiarity with secure teletherapy platforms, electronic record-keeping systems, and HIPAA compliance is essential. Exceptional active listening, empathy, and clear virtual communication help build trust and rapport in a remote setting. These skills and qualities are crucial for providing effective support, maintaining confidentiality, and ensuring client well-being in an online environment.

How does an online counselor typically collaborate with other mental health professionals while working remotely?

Online counselors often work as part of a multidisciplinary team, even when operating remotely. They regularly collaborate with psychiatrists, social workers, and other therapists through secure digital platforms, case conferences, and coordinated care plans. This collaboration ensures clients receive comprehensive support and allows counselors to refer clients or seek guidance when specialized intervention is needed. Maintaining open communication and thorough documentation is key to effective teamwork in a virtual environment.

Job description

Make an impact when people need it most.

When someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, the right support at the right moment can make all the difference.

Family Services is looking for a compassionate, confident, and dependable Crisis Counselor to join our Crisis Center team. In this role, you will provide immediate support to individuals experiencing mental health emergencies, assess safety and needs, coordinate appropriate services, and help individuals and families navigate some of life's most difficult moments.

Whether you are an experienced human services professional or a recent graduate ready to begin your career, this is an opportunity to develop valuable clinical skills while doing meaningful work in your community.

Your Schedule

  • 2-2-3 Rotation | Every Other Weekend Off
  • Our rotating schedule means you:
    • Work only 7 days during each two-week pay period
    • Have every other weekend off
    • Receive a $3/hour shift differential for 2nd, 3rd, and weekend shifts
    • Have a predictable schedule that allows for extended stretches of time off

What You Will Do

As a Crisis Counselor, you will be part of a team providing critical crisis intervention and mental health support to individuals in our community. You will:

  • Provide crisis intervention and support to individuals experiencing mental health emergencies.
  • Assess mental health status, safety, suicide and homicide risk, and an individual's ability to care for themselves.
  • Develop short-term plans with individuals to address immediate safety, mental health, and basic needs.
  • Coordinate emergency services and connect individuals with appropriate community resources.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, healthcare providers, county agencies, and other community partners.
  • Serve as a liaison between individuals and organizations providing ongoing services and support.
  • Assess for and coordinate Chapter 55 Protective Placements after normal business hours when necessary.

Who We Are Looking For

You may be a great fit if you are someone who:

  • Remains calm and compassionate in challenging situations.
  • Can listen, assess, problem-solve, and make thoughtful decisions.
  • Builds strong professional relationships with clients, coworkers, and community partners.
  • Is comfortable working both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Wants to build a career in behavioral health, mental health, counseling, social work, or crisis services.
  • Finds purpose in helping people through difficult moments.

Education & Requirements

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in a mental health, human services, or related field. New graduates are encouraged to apply. Extensive training is provided to help you build the knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in crisis services.
  • A valid Wisconsin driver's license, reliable personal vehicle, required automobile insurance, and an acceptable driving record are also required.

Grow Your Career With Us

This role can be an excellent opportunity to build your clinical experience and advance your behavioral health career. Clinical hours and supervision toward LCSW or LPC licensure may be available. You will also gain hands-on experience in crisis assessment, suicide prevention, safety planning, emergency mental health services, community resources, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Why Family Services?

At Family Services, our mission is to Protect, Heal, and Care for children, individuals, and families throughout Northeast Wisconsin. That mission starts with the people who make our work possible. We are committed to creating a workplace where employees feel supported, valued, and equipped to do meaningful work. Our comprehensive benefits package includes:

  • Supplemental benefit options
  • Paid time off and vacation
  • Paid holidays
  • Retirement savings
  • Professional development opportunities
  • $3/hour differential for 2nd, 3rd, and weekend shifts
  • Opportunities for clinical development and supervision
