What is an online communications instructor?

Online Communications Instructors are educators who teach students how to effectively communicate using digital platforms. They design and deliver courses on topics such as digital writing, social media communication, virtual presentations, and online collaboration. These instructors use various online tools and technologies to engage students and assess their progress. Their role often includes creating course materials, facilitating discussions, and providing feedback to help students develop strong communication skills suited for the digital world.

What does an online communications instructor do?

As an online communications instructor, you teach students the skills they need to work in fields like marketing, journalism, and public relations. You might work for a college or trade school that offers degree and certificate programs over the internet. In this role, you lead a virtual class in much the same way as you would a traditional one, except that you provide lessons and communicate with students via your institution’s learning management system or LMS. As a remote instructor, your duties include creating the course syllabus and lesson plans, offering lectures and reading assignments, and providing quizzes and tests to assess student progress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online communications instructor?

To thrive as an Online Communications Instructor, you need expertise in communication theories, digital media, and instructional design, generally supported by a relevant degree and teaching experience. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) like Canvas or Blackboard, video conferencing platforms, and online assessment tools is typical. Strong soft skills include clarity in virtual communication, adaptability, and the ability to engage and motivate remote learners. These skills are crucial for delivering effective instruction and fostering meaningful student participation in an online environment.

What are some common challenges online communications instructors face when engaging students in a virtual learning environment?

One common challenge for Online Communications Instructors is maintaining student engagement and participation, as virtual environments can sometimes feel less interactive compared to in-person classes. Instructors often need to thoughtfully design discussions, activities, and assessments that encourage active involvement and collaboration among students. Additionally, adapting teaching materials for diverse learning styles and managing varying levels of digital literacy can require extra flexibility and creativity. Regular feedback, accessible office hours, and fostering a sense of community can help address these challenges and create a more dynamic online classroom.

Who We Are:

With three campuses along Colorado’s Front Range, FRCC is the state’s largest community college. We enroll close to 28,000 students annually from our diverse service area, which offers a variety of cultural and recreational activities.

Each year approximately 5,000 FRCC students transfer to four-year universities and FRCC offers more than 36 career training programs that prepare students for immediate employment and rewarding careers. One of FRCC’s main goals is to offer educational excellence for everyone. The college’s strong commitment to student success means we start by creating an inclusive and equitable environment—one where both students and employees feel they belong and are supported. FRCC’s focus on diversity, equity and inclusion is woven into the fabric of our college conversations and decision-making processes.
