College/Department Information
Academic Advisement is where undergraduates begin. Our centralized advisement services are designed to provide comprehensive support as students navigate their way into their respective major programs. Our team of Undergraduate Academic Advisors are well-versed in the undergraduate programs and core curriculum, assisting students in developing academic plans, selecting courses, recommending actions, and connecting them with campus resources as needed.
We work closely with academic programs and support services to help students identify and confirm their academic career paths. Our professional advisors offer ongoing support through various means, including outreach services, personal phone calls, targeted emails, and electronic messages.
We have two convenient locations: on the second floor of University Hall (262) on the Summerville campus and the Health Sciences Campus. We are open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We offer walk-in hours for quick consultations. Our most up-to-date walk-in hours can be found via the Academic Advisement Center Staff webpage . Advising appointments are required for next term advisement to ensure both the advisor and student are prepared for a productive session. Job Summary
The Undergraduate Academic Advisor provides mentoring and advisement for a cohort of first and second year students to assist in goal setting, academic planning, and career exploration through personal follow up/outreach, individual appointments, and programming.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
DIRECT STUDENT ADVISING AND SUPPORT : Meets formally with students to develop meaningful connections using holistic advising and coaching methods. Provides high-quality academic advising services to new and current August University students. This will include guiding advisees to identify academic, professional, and personal goals that align with their abilities, interests, and the institution's purpose. Maintain accurate and detailed advising notes through the electronic advising system and track advisee performance during and at the end of each semester. Provide intentional outreach to students. Maintain records for current and former students in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Cultivate supportive communication by phone, text, email, and face-to-face with active and prospective students to effectively help students navigate their academic journey. Provide a welcoming and supportive environment, always demonstrated through utmost professionalism. Making use of the skills necessary to process situations critically, recognize crucial gaps in advisees' knowledge and skills, and assist students with identifying opportunities to build their strengths.
ADVISING AND RETENTION : Advise and coach students regarding their academic degree requirements, which include but are not limited to certification, application, change of major, permissions, test scores, course selection, course withdrawals, grades, etc. Monitors the retention, progression, and graduation of students within the assigned population, and offers proactive outreach for those students who are at academic or social risk. Connect students with appropriate academic and non-academic student services that promote their success, and maintain thorough and accurate documentation of individual advising sessions. Maintain collaborative partnerships with student services, faculty, career, and academic staff. Work with students, in collaboration with faculty, Deans, and department chairs, to develop realistic goals that will contribute to academic and personal success in college. Assist students who present risk factors to develop individual plans for success.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATIONAL SUPPORT : Utilizes and incorporates best practices identified through the analysis of reports/analytics related to advising activity, student success metrics, etc. Contributes to the coordination of unit-level communication plans regarding key milestones, registration deadlines, academic resources, etc. Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of events, programs, and resources that support the success of students. Attend regular departmental meetings to remain aware of the guidelines or potential issue(s) of curriculum changes. Participate in training as necessary to understand the ways technology, student development theory, and various environments affect advising. Membership and participation in professional development opportunities offered through Augusta University, state, regional, and national organizations (NACADA).
OTHER : Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college or university and one year of related experience OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with two years of experience in education or a customer/student-facing role.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college or university with experience in higher education.
