Job description

Blood Bank Technologist

The Blood Bank Technologist plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient management of blood and blood products. This position is responsible for maintaining inventory, performing daily temperature quality control of designated refrigerators, and preparing products such as thawed fresh frozen plasma and aliquoted units for pediatric patients. Additional responsibilities include logging and issuing blood products, performing clerical duties, and responding to phone inquiries, while effectively communicating needs to staff under the direction of the Chief Technologist.

Performs specimen processing, testing, and result reporting with accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to established turnaround times, including escalation of critical values.

Maintains and monitors blood/blood product inventory to ensure availability, minimize waste, and issue components for transfusion within required timelines.

Conducts and documents quality control procedures on equipment and techniques, identifies and resolves QC issues, and reports out-of-range results in accordance with departmental policy.

Completes required computer functions and clerical tasks with accuracy, supporting the operational and documentation needs of the Blood Bank.

Ensures cleanliness, order, and proper functioning of assigned work areas and equipment, following departmental safety and productivity standards.

Demonstrates compliance with University Hospital's policies, regulatory standards, and corporate code of conduct, while keeping current on changes in federal, state, and institutional requirements.

Communicates effectively with staff and supervisors, organizing pending work for follow-up and performing additional related duties as assigned.

Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent required. ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.
