Job description

Job Objective:
The Central Power Station (CPS) supplies and dispatches all electrical power to the Prudhoe Bay Unit oil field. The successful candidate is expected to cross-train as a Transmission and Distribution Lineman as well as a Standby Power Plant Operator, which may include duties such as:

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Primary duties are working with the other high voltage substation T&D technicians and linemen on Medium/Low voltage equipment within the overall distribution system including in-plant generation and control equipment at both CPS/EOA Power Plants including 135VDC to 13.8KV equipment.
  • Be available in emergency callout rotation. Performs other duties, tasks and special projects as assigned.
  • Maintenance and development of skills and competency, knowledge and understanding of controls, basic relay operation and trouble shooting skills are required.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of control and protection circuitry associated with high voltage equipment such as oil filled breakers, gas filled breakers and oil filled transformers.
  • Adhere to all safety rules and practices established by Hilcorp Alaska.
  • Conduct duties in a manner that provides for the utmost protection of the environment. Report all incidents and near-misses related to personnel, equipment, and the environment. Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the job. Participate with other team members to develop ideas to control expenses, enhance safety and improve overall operations.

  • Maintain Hilcorp computer-based training requirements.
  • Experience with oil and gas circuit breakers, oil filled transformers, capacitor banks and various other electrical apparatus used in an electrical utility setting.
  • Working with the other high voltage substation technicians, Relay technicians and linemen on Medium/Low voltage equipment within the power system.
  • Perform Preventative and Electrical Maintenance for both CPS and EOA Power Plants
  • Operation of man lifts and other heavy equipment.
  • Read, understand and comply with all Company and Departmental policies and procedures
  • Participate in the development, writing and review of required procedures

Other Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist T&D metering and relay technicians.
  • Water washing of high voltage system insulators
  • Safety escorts of high loads, high voltage transformer and circuit breaker maintenance/repairs, drill rig MV hook-ups/disconnects and performing safe-outs.
  • Operating and maintaining eight (8) Standby generators comprised of gas turbines and diesel reciprocating units operating at voltages to 4.16KV
  • Operation of man lifts and other heavy equipment requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Rigging, Line Repairs and Maintenance
  • HV/MV substation and transmission/distribution experience is required in this multi-skilled team.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work a 12-hour rotating schedule which includes 14 days on and 14 days off, and willing to hold over if needed for coverage.
  • Work experience in electrical utilities in arctic conditions and oil field environments is desirable.
  • Preferred: Experience in power plant operations, generation with associated equipment, excitation systems, maintenance, and troubleshooting of low/medium voltage switchgears
  • Preferred: Experience in servicing and testing of dry type and oil-filled power transformers
  • Preferred: Experience in servicing and testing of SF-6 Gas and oil-filled circuit breakers
  • Require minimal supervision, direction, and training in the performance of routine and non-routine duties.
  • Demonstrate an increased ability to work unsupervised, act upon an acquired knowledge of how the power system functions, anticipate and correct problems before they occur or before other parts of the system are affected.
  • Demonstrate the ability to routinely operate machinery/mechanical equipment unsupervised, while maintaining the facility in a safe, environmentally sound condition and maintaining neat and accurate records of the operations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to recognize when non-standard or non-routine conditions exist at the facility, notify supervisory staff, and offer recommendations for solutions to the problem.
  • Suitable mathematic skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other departments, officials, and the public.
  • Ability to consider safety in all decisions.

Education Requirements:

  • Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent or any equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating sufficient knowledge, ability and skill to handle the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Current Alaska Department of Labor Certificate of Fitness, Electrician Journeyman
  • Possess, or be able to obtain a commercial drivers license (CDL) within six months
