What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Offshore Structural Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Offshore Structural Design Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering, typically supported by a relevant degree and professional certification such as PE or Chartered Engineer status. Proficiency with design software like STAAD.Pro, SACS, and AutoCAD, as well as familiarity with industry codes (e.g., API, DNV), is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are crucial to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient design solutions for complex offshore environments.

What are the typical challenges faced by Offshore Structural Design Engineers when working on projects?

Offshore Structural Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as designing structures to withstand harsh marine environments, including high winds, waves, and corrosion. They must also ensure compliance with stringent industry standards and safety regulations while balancing project budgets and timelines. Effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—such as marine engineers, geotechnical specialists, and construction crews—is crucial for integrating design solutions and addressing unexpected issues that may arise during fabrication or installation. These factors make adaptability and problem-solving essential skills for success in this role.

What is the difference between Offshore Structural Design Engineer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectOffshore Structural Design EngineerStructural Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Civil/Structural Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Civil/Structural Engineering, PE license often required
Work EnvironmentDesigning structures for offshore platforms, oil rigs, and marine environmentsDesigning buildings, bridges, and infrastructure on land
Industry UsageOil & gas, renewable energy, marine constructionConstruction, infrastructure, commercial and residential buildings
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

While both roles require strong engineering credentials and involve structural design, Offshore Structural Design Engineers focus on designing structures for marine and offshore environments, whereas Structural Engineers typically work on land-based projects. The offshore role involves specialized knowledge of marine conditions and safety standards, making it distinct in scope and environment.

What does an Offshore Structural Design Engineer do?

An Offshore Structural Design Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of structures used in offshore environments, such as oil platforms, wind turbines, and subsea infrastructure. They ensure these structures can withstand harsh ocean conditions, including waves, wind, and corrosion. Their work involves using advanced engineering principles, computer modeling, and compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is also a key part of the role.

We are a global leader in engineering and construction for the energy and infrastructure sectors, delivering complex onshore and offshore projects worldwide. Driven by technological innovation as "One Company", our 30,000 people from over 130 nationalities in more than 50 countries work every day to enable the energy transition toward Net Zero. At Saipem, your expertise helps shape the future globally for environmental sustainability.
Purpose of the position: As Offshore Structural Engineer, you will respond to the Offshore Structural Lead and be part of the Asset Based Business Line within the Engineering function. You will support the ongoing EPCI projects that Saipem has in the Americas region performing structural calculations, design for lifting and rigging, and seafastening.
How can you support us? Here below your responsibilities:
  • In charge of the design of incorporated subsea structures and/or associated installation aids and sea-fastening, for deepwater and shallow water field development.
  • Perform technical tasks assigned by the Subsea Structural Lead such as structural analyses, calculations, design, verification or study activities, specification/requisition writing.
  • Provide data to Designers to allow the creation of 3D and 2D design drawings. Review the design drawings.
  • Interface with other Project Specialists (installation, geotechnical, flowline, subsea equipment, fabrication, etc.) and Designers.
  • Cumulate an experience about the design limitation and constraint imposed by offshore installation and related vessels.
  • Provide support to the Subsea Structural lead for coordination and review of technical activities performed inside or outside Saipem.
  • Participate and contribute to:
    • Project progress meeting,
    • Engineering coordination meetings
    • Interface meetings with Client, other Contractors and Sub-Contractors
    • Technical review meeting (concerning Procurement, Engineering, Fabrication, Operation, Interface)
    • HSE meetings
    • Risk Assessment
  • Design structural systems and components, pursuing objectives of robust engineering and design optimization in term of costs, fabrication simplicity, constructability and safety, in particular
  • Select the most relevant design loads and boundary condition to maximize the installation and in-place acceptable configurations, even unexpected, but always reasonably
  • Check the selected design comply with all the structure functionalities, including constructability and offshore installability constraints
  • Select the profiles and materials as standard as possible to simplify the procurement. Local procurement can be a constraint if requested by the project
  • Check the permanent structures are sufficiently reliable for a long time, without maintenance during the subsea field life.
  • Particularly considering need of redundancy, high reliability, as well as corrosion and fatigue aspect
  • Check that the installation aids are focused on the operational practicality and on the safety of workers
  • For permanent structure, liaise with other Project discipline team (offshore installation, geotechnical, flowline, subsea equipment, fabrication, material, etc.), whenever required for a proper completion of the work assigned, particularly to obtain the confirmation of the preliminary load cases or fabrication assumption considered at start of the project
  • For installation aids structure, liaise with Installation method team in order to clarify the functional scope of work used as basis and to define the technical structural solution
  • Carry out/Check/Supervise structural analyses. Particularly, define own load and boundary condition assumption, as well as the good level of modelization (hand calculation, beam model, FEA model), sufficient to provide the demonstration of the structure capacity
  • Use the industry calculation software following the user manual, for a good selection and application of the numerical tools Interface with Designer to Provide data necessary for the creation of 3D and 2D design drawings (including geometrical, material, welding, tolerance and functional data).
