Job description

Genesis Marine is safe, reliable and efficient with the right equipment for the industry's marine transportation needs. We primarily serve refineries and storage terminals along the Gulf Coast, East Coast, Canada, Great Lakes, Intracoastal Canal and western river systems of the United States, including the Red, Ouachita and Mississippi Rivers on which Genesis has significant existing terminals.Genesis Marine owns and operates two fleets, inland and offshore, including approximately 130 vessels. Our state-of-the-art barges coupled with the best liquid cargo mariners make us the safest, most efficient carrier of inland, hot-oil cargoes. Our inland fleet consists of approximately 82 barges and 33 push-boats and our offshore fleet consists of nine boats and nine barges and one ocean going tanker. We have a total design capacity of 2.3 mmbbl for Inland Marine Operations, 0.9 mmbbl for Offshore Marine Operations and 0.3 mmbbl for the M/T American Phoenix (ocean-going tanker).We provide a safe and competitive service, adhering to strict operating procedures which are designed to not only meet, but also exceed customer & regulatory requirements.
The Chief Engineer/Relief Engineer is responsible for operating and maintaining the engine room and other mechanical systems and equipment aboard the vessel to which he/she is assigned and its tow, for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel and its tow, including but not limited to compliance with flag state and classification society regulations, the seaworthiness of the vessel, the safety of the crew, protection of the environment, operational and maintenance administration and paperwork, cost control, crew supervision and on the job training, and other responsibilities that may be assigned by the vessel's Captain or that the Chief Engineer/Relief Engineer recognizes as essential to his/her responsibility as manager of the vessel's mechanical systems.
Key Duties:
The responsibilities of the Chief Engineer/Relief Engineer shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
  • Safe operation and routine maintenance of the vessel's propulsion, auxiliary and other mechanical systems in compliance with the applicable laws and regulations of the vessel's flag, the international community, Company policies and procedures, and the manufacturer's recommendations in a manner responsible to the safety of the crew.
  • Loading and storing of bunkers, lubricating oils and transferring of bunkers and oils to the tow or other vessels, and storage/management of bilge and bilge slops in accordance with Company procedures and in a manner responsible to the safety of the crew and the protection of the natural environment.
  • Operational management of the vessel's human resources, consumable spares, mechanical stores and tools inventories, including cost management, in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Company.
  • Set and stand engine room watches in rotation with other members in the vessel crew.
  • Direct and supervise the engine room crew in the execution of their duties as articulated on their own job descriptions, and as otherwise deemed necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
  • Maintain courteous and professional relationships with service vendor representatives.
  • Complete appropriate engine room management and human resource administrative tasks.

Required Skills, Experience, and Education:
  • Ability to read and write English
  • Ability to render, understand and react to commands given in English.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Must possess a U.S. Merchant Mariner's document and a STCW training and certification booklet, as required by law.
  • Must possess the proper license by the U.S.C.G. for the type, horsepower and service of the vessel to which he/she is assigned.
