What is the difference between Offshore Autocad vs Onshore Autocad?

AspectOffshore AutocadOnshore Autocad
Work EnvironmentRemote, often in different countriesOn-site at local offices or project sites
CredentialsSimilar certifications, such as AutoCAD proficiencySame as offshore, with additional local licensing if required
Industry UsageCommon in global engineering, architecture, and construction firmsPrimarily local or regional projects
CommunicationRemote collaboration, time zone considerationsFace-to-face interaction, immediate feedback

Offshore Autocad professionals work remotely, often across different countries, while Onshore Autocad specialists operate locally at company offices. Both roles require similar certifications and skills, but differ mainly in work environment and communication methods. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers choose the right fit for their project needs.

What are some common challenges faced by Offshore AutoCAD professionals, and how can they be effectively managed?

Offshore AutoCAD professionals often work with teams located in different time zones, which can make real-time communication and collaboration challenging. Managing large and complex CAD files remotely can also present technical difficulties, such as ensuring compatibility and data integrity. To overcome these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication protocols, use reliable collaboration tools, and regularly synchronize project files. Many teams also implement standardized templates and file naming conventions to streamline workflow and reduce errors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Offshore AutoCAD Designer, and why are they important?

To excel as an Offshore AutoCAD Designer, you need advanced proficiency in AutoCAD software, a strong background in engineering or drafting, and familiarity with offshore industry standards. Experience with design tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and knowledge of industry-specific codes or certifications (like API or ISO) are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure precise, compliant designs and smooth collaboration with multidisciplinary teams in challenging offshore environments.

What are Offshore AutoCAD jobs?

Offshore AutoCAD jobs involve using AutoCAD software to create technical drawings, plans, and schematics for offshore engineering projects such as oil rigs, wind farms, and marine structures. Professionals in these roles typically work with engineers and designers to produce detailed and accurate drawings that comply with industry standards and project specifications. These jobs may require knowledge of offshore construction, safety regulations, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, often in remote or international locations.

Full-time
Description
EwingCole is a nationally recognized architecture, engineering, interior design and planning firm with offices across the country. Our multi-disciplinary practice is built on the core values of professional excellence, design quality and collaboration. We are looking for a BIM Support Specialist to join our team in our Philadelphia office.
The BIM Support Specialist provides technical support and coordination for BIM workflows across the firm. This role focuses on troubleshooting software and model performance issues, supporting project setup, maintaining standards and templates, and ensuring model quality and data integrity. The BIM Support Specialist also contributes to training, process improvement, and collaboration across project teams.
Essential Functions:
  • Support project teams to troubleshoot Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, Enscape, Bluebeam software issues, including crashes, sync errors, and model corruption.
  • Assist in initiating new BIM projects by establishing shared coordinates, setting up model folder structures, project team members, bridges and linking consultant files in Autodesk Construction Cloud (Forma).
  • Conduct regular "health checks" using BimBeats on active models to manage warnings, best practices adherence and ensure files remain lean and perform well.
  • Assist in developing, updating, and maintaining a standardized Revit family & detail libraries and project templates to ensure consistency across all deliverables.
  • Create "how-to" guides and lead training sessions to upskill staff on BIM workflows, best practices, and new software updates.
  • Identify opportunities to use Dynamo, PyRevit, or other plugins to automate repetitive modeling tasks and improve efficiency.
  • Coordinate with IT and design leads to manage software licensing, deployments, and hardware requirements for high-performance modeling.
  • Verify that the Level of Development (LOD) in models meets the specific requirements of the contract at each project milestone.
  • Serve as the primary technical bridge between the local design office and offshore production teams to ensure Revit modeling accuracy and schedule compliance.
  • Manage large datasets from 3D laser scans, including indexing (RCP/RCS files) and optimizing point cloud visibility within the Revit environment.
  • Audit models produced by offshore teams against raw point cloud data to ensure "As-Built" conditions are modeled within specified tolerances.
  • Develop and implement standardized SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for converting point clouds into architectural, structural, or MEP Revit elements.
  • Review and clean consultant-provided SAT files in Rhino or AutoCAD before import to remove redundant geometry, ensuring Revit families remain lightweight and fast.
  • Lead BIM Kickoff meetings as the primary facilitator when the BIM Manager is unavailable, ensuring all project stakeholders are aligned on digital delivery goals from the start.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary coordination meetings and clash resolution sessions in the absence of the BIM Coordinator.
  • Participate in occasional off-site multi-day laser scanning projects, ensuring high-quality spatial data collection.
  • Work with vendors as needed

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a BIM/Production support role within an AEC firm.
  • Mastery of Revit and Autodesk Construction Cloud is required; proficiency in Rhino, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam is highly preferred.
  • Proven experience using Dynamo or pyRevit for task automation.
  • Practical experience managing and indexing 3D laser scan data (Point Clouds) within a Revit environment.
  • Solid understanding of AIA LOD standards and interdisciplinary MEP/Structural coordination.
  • Experience developing technical documentation and leading group training sessions.

Benefits of Working at EwingCole
Generous paid time off, 401(k) plan with company match, tuition reimbursement, flexible/hybrid work options, paid parental leave, excellent insurance offerings including medical, dental, vision, accident, critical illness, hospital indemnity, identity protection and more.
