Many roles focus on sustainability, minimalism, and reducing reliance on modern infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Off Grid Living position, and why are they important?

These skills and qualities are vital to ensure safety, efficiency, and successful project implementation in often remote or challenging environments.

What are the primary challenges faced by professionals working in Off Grid Living roles?

Job description

Technical Services Supervisor (Boyne City or Newaygo, MI)
Great Lakes Energy is looking for an innovative and driven Supervisor of Technical Services in either our Boyne City or our Newaygo location to lead critical technologies that power our electric distribution system and fiber network. This is a high-impact leadership opportunity at the intersection of energy, data, and connectivity-where your expertise directly supports reliability, resilience, and the future of our grid.
Who We Are
For more than 85 years, Great Lakes Energy has delivered reliable electric service to rural communities across 26 counties in western and northern Michigan. As the state's largest member-owned electric utility, we serve more than 128,000 meters with a commitment to innovation, transparency, and exceptional member service. We don't just power homes-we connect communities. Through our communications subsidiary, Truestream, and initiatives like the People Fund, we invest in stronger, more vibrant communities. Our employees bring passion, collaboration, and purpose to everything they do.
A Day in the Life
No two days look exactly the same-and that's exactly what makes this role exciting. You'll lead efforts that keep our systems smart, connected, and reliable. From analyzing AMI and SCADA communication performance to collaborating across teams to solve technical challenges, your work directly impacts system reliability and member satisfaction. You'll guide a technical team, oversee fiber network operations and metering systems, and drive improvements that strengthen our grid.
Who You Are
You are a forward-thinking technical leader who thrives in a fast-evolving environment and enjoys solving complex challenges. You are also a strategic thinker, collaborative leader, and continuous improvement mindset champion.
Some highlights of your education and experience include:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a closely related field (equivalent advanced technical education and professional licenses may be considered)
  • At least five years of relevant experience, including at least one year of supervisory responsibility
  • Strong knowledge of AMI, SCADA, fiber networks, and distributed energy resources
What You'll Do
  • Lead and develop a team of technical professionals
  • Oversee AMI, SCADA, and fiber systems performance
  • Oversee distributed energy resource member programs
  • Ensure accurate data flow and system integration
  • Support reliability and power quality initiatives
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to improve efficiency
  • Manage vendors, contracts, and budget
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement
  • Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards
What's in It for You?

  • The Essentials - Comprehensive health insurance coverage for you and your family.
  • Time to Spend - Generous paid time off (PTO).
  • Better Health Through Better Living - Wellness programs supporting your overall well-being.

  • Growing Your Family - Paid parental leave and adoption assistance.
  • Never Stop Learning - Ongoing training and development opportunities.
  • Planning for the Future - Retirement savings plans including pension and 401(k).
