Job description

Beach Safety Lifeguard

Performs skilled ocean rescue and water safety work in the protection of residents and visitors patronizing the City's beaches. Work includes rigorous physical training and conditioning, and ensuring patron adherence to established laws, rules and ordinances governing the public use of City beaches. Work requires considerable communication, interaction and contact with the general public. Work is performed under close supervision with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

High school diploma or GED. Must pass United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) or equivalent agency's training and requirements, or successful completion of training academy within 3 months of hire. Must pass bi-annual requalification by swimming 500 meters in 10 minutes or less. Must have Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Must have Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training in communicable disease transmission prevention. State of Florida EMT and/or Paramedic certifications preferred and eligible for a 2.5% certification increase. Must have National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification (level to be determined by job classification requirements) or obtain within one year of employment. Must have a valid Florida driver's license and maintain satisfactory driving record throughout employment. May be required to have or obtain additional formal industry certification(s) based on area of assignment In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications listed above, an individual must be able to perform each of the established essential functions in order to perform this job successfully.
