Job description

Ocean Freight Supervisor

Starting at $85,000+ | Full-Time | On-Site | Hayward, CA


A growing international logistics company is seeking an experienced Ocean Freight Supervisor to lead daily ocean import and export operations. This hands-on position requires strong Ocean freight forwarding knowledge, team leadership experience, and the ability to manage operational issues with limited oversight.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily ocean import and export shipments, documentation, cargo movement, customs clearance coordination, and final delivery.
  • Lead, train, coach, and support ocean freight operations staff.
  • Assign workloads and monitor staffing, productivity, service levels, and departmental KPIs.
  • Resolve customer escalations, shipment delays, claims, and operational exceptions.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. Customs, FMC, DOT, TSA, and other transportation regulations.
  • Coordinate with ocean carriers, steamship lines, NVOCCs, customs brokers, truckers, warehouses, vendors, overseas agents, and customers.
  • Review bills of lading, commercial invoices, packing lists, arrival notices, and customs documentation.
  • Improve workflows and standard operating procedures to increase efficiency and profitability.
  • Support new customer implementations, account retention, and business growth.


Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of ocean freight forwarding experience.
  • Hands-on experience with both ocean imports and ocean exports is required.
  • Minimum 2 years of team leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Current or recent experience as an Ocean Freight Supervisor, Senior Supervisor, Ocean Import Supervisor, Ocean Export Supervisor, Team Lead, or Lead Agent.
  • Strong knowledge of ocean freight documentation, Incoterms, customs clearance, regulatory compliance, and carrier coordination.
  • Experience training employees and independently managing daily operations and escalations.
  • Strong communication, customer service, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
