What does an Ocean Engineer do?

An Ocean Engineer designs, develops, and maintains technology and structures used in marine environments. They work on offshore platforms, underwater robotics, coastal protection systems, and renewable ocean energy projects. Their role involves solving engineering challenges related to underwater pressure, corrosion, and wave impact. Ocean Engineers collaborate with marine scientists and environmentalists to create sustainable solutions for ocean exploration and resource utilization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Ocean Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Ocean Engineer, you need a strong background in marine engineering principles, physics, mathematics, and a relevant engineering degree such as naval architecture or ocean engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, computational modeling tools, underwater robotics, and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are often required. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help Ocean Engineers excel in multidisciplinary and often remote environments. These abilities ensure safe, innovative, and efficient solutions to complex challenges encountered in marine and offshore projects.

Can you make $250,000 as an engineer?

Ocean engineers typically earn salaries below $250,000, with median wages around $80,000 to $120,000 annually. Achieving a salary of $250,000 usually requires extensive experience, advanced specialization, management roles, or working in high-cost-of-living areas. High-level positions or consulting roles may reach or exceed this figure, but they are less common for entry- or mid-level engineers.

What are typical work environments and daily tasks for an Ocean Engineer?

Ocean Engineers often split their time between office-based design work and field assignments, such as conducting underwater surveys or supervising offshore installations. Daily tasks may include designing marine structures, analyzing environmental data, preparing technical reports, and collaborating with scientists, divers, and other engineers. Many projects involve working as part of a multidisciplinary team to address challenges like corrosion, environmental impact, and safety compliance. The role can require travel and periods working at sea, offering a dynamic and varied work environment for those who enjoy both technical and hands-on experiences.

Job description

Unleash the Power of Multi-Mission Excellence: Safeguarding the Seas for the World's Navies.
Step into a world where cutting-edge technology meets unparalleled expertise. Ultra Maritime pioneers delivering multi-mission solutions that protect and empower the naval forces worldwide. With our extensive portfolio of capabilities, our innovations are utilized on naval fleets across our allied navies around the globe.
As the maritime and underwater battlespace evolves, we tirelessly push the boundaries to develop advanced specialist systems that provide our 'five-eyes' Defense customers with an unbeatable warfighting edge. From surface vessels to sub-surface operations and unmanned platforms, we are revolutionizing the way naval missions are executed.
We thrive on collaboration and partnering with our customers to ensure mission success. Our expert solutions encompass an array of game-changing technologies, including state-of-the-art sonar, radar, and expendables.
Join us in shaping the future of naval warfare and together, we will safeguard the seas and empower navies worldwide!
Our mission is simple: build reliable, mission-ready products that protect those who protect us. As a Manufacturing Engineer, you play a direct role in national defense by turning engineering designs into repeatable, high-quality production realities. This is a floor-driven, ownership-heavy role for engineers who execute, solve, and improve.
The Impact You'll Make
You will own manufacturing processes from concept through full-rate production, ensuring our products are built safely, efficiently, and right the first time. Your work directly affects production throughput, quality, cost, and delivery in a high-stakes defense environment.
Nationality Requirements
Candidates must be eligible to obtain the relevant security clearance required for the role, due to the nature of the programmes we deliver for our customers.
Job Description
What You'll Do
  • Design, develop, and sustain manufacturing processes that support safe, repeatable, and compliant production.
  • Lead manufacturing execution for new product introductions (NPI), from prototype through production ramp.
  • Translate engineering designs into clear, effective work instructions, routings, and bills of material.
  • Own process troubleshooting on the production floor-identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and prevent recurrence.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, yield, safety, and cost reduction.
  • Partner with Operations to establish labor standards, line balancing, and capacity inputs supporting SIOP and production planning.
  • Specify, justify, and support tooling, fixtures, equipment, and capital investments.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Design Engineering, Quality, and Supply Chain to resolve production constraints.
  • Ensure manufacturing processes meet AS9100/ISO requirements, customer specifications, and internal quality standards.
  • Support training, audits, and compliance activities in an ITAR-regulated environment.

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 7+ years of hands-on manufacturing engineering experience in a regulated, high-reliability environment (defense, aerospace, medical, automotive, etc.).
  • Proven ability to execute on the production floor-not just from behind a desk.
  • Strong process documentation skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience driving root cause analysis, corrective action, and process improvement.
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally and holding accountability through execution.
  • Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems and data-driven decision making.
  • Ability to work onsite and support production operations.
  • U.S. Person status with ability to comply with ITAR requirements.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Defense or aerospace manufacturing experience.
  • AS9100 or ISO 9001 familiarity.
  • Lean manufacturing, Kaizen, or Six Sigma experience.
  • Experience supporting high-mix, low-to-medium volume production.
  • Exposure to labor modeling, capacity planning, or industrial engineering methods.
  • CAD experience for tooling or fixture design.

Why Join Us
  • Directly support national defense and mission-critical programs.
  • Own real manufacturing problems with visible impact.
  • Work alongside operators, engineers, and leaders who value execution over bureaucracy.
  • Competitive compensation, strong benefits, and long-term career growth.
