Obs Operator information

What is an OBS Operator?

An OBS Operator is a technical professional responsible for managing and operating Open Broadcaster Software (OBS), which is widely used for live streaming and recording video content. Their duties typically include setting up audio and video sources, configuring scenes, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring smooth broadcasts. OBS Operators often work in various environments such as live events, esports tournaments, online classes, or corporate webinars, making their role essential for high-quality live production. Strong technical skills and attention to detail are important for success in this position.

What are some common challenges faced by an Obs Operator and how can they be managed effectively?

Obs Operators often work in fast-paced environments where monitoring multiple data streams and responding to system alerts quickly are crucial. One common challenge is maintaining focus and accuracy during long shifts, especially when handling complex or simultaneous incidents. Effective time management, strong communication with team members, and familiarity with monitoring tools can help mitigate these challenges. Regular training and clear protocols also support quick decision-making and collaboration within the operations team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Obs Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Obs Operator, you need strong attention to detail, situational awareness, and a solid understanding of surveillance or monitoring protocols, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant training. Familiarity with CCTV systems, radio communication devices, and incident reporting software is typically required. Excellent communication, calmness under pressure, and integrity are essential soft skills for handling sensitive information and responding effectively to incidents. These abilities are crucial to ensuring safety, compliance, and timely response in environments that rely on observation and monitoring operations.

Gruns

Los Angeles, CA

Job description

About the role

Gruns is building a live commerce studio from the ground up, and the Livestream Operator is the person who makes every stream run without a hitch. This is a technical and production role - you'll own the back end of every broadcast, keep talent supported and on track, and ensure the viewer experience is seamless from start to finish. If you're a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced production environment and knows how to keep things moving without being told twice, this is your role.

  • Location: On-site, Culver City, CA (in-studio)
  • Schedule: This role starts part-time at ~20 hours/week, with the potential to grow to full-time as the studio scales.
  • Employment type: Hourly W2
  • Pay: $35/hr + commission
In this role, you will:
  • Manage the technical side of each live stream - equipment setup, stream configuration, and real-time troubleshooting
  • Run back-end platform functions during broadcasts, including flash sales, giveaways, and other live commerce features
  • Moderate the live chat - keeping it on-brand, engaging, and free of distractions
  • Support talent throughout every stream - coordinating logistics so hosts can stay focused on performing
  • Make occasional on-camera appearances as needed in a supporting capacity
  • Film short-form content to supplement live streams and contribute to brainstorming and ideation for social content
We're looking for someone who:
  • Has experience in production - whether on a film or TV set, in a studio environment, or in a technical live event capacity
  • Is comfortable operating production equipment and platforms without hand-holding
  • Has worked closely with on-camera talent and knows how to create an environment where they can do their best work
  • Has experience with live streaming platforms (TikTok Live, YouTube Live, OBS, or similar) - or picks up new tools fast
  • Is highly reliable - this is a shift-based role and showing up prepared, on time, and ready to execute is non-negotiable
Approach to the role:
  • You anticipate problems before they happen and fix them before anyone else notices
  • You're calm under pressure - when something goes sideways mid-stream, you handle it without making it a moment
  • You take ownership of your environment. The studio, the stream, the chat - it's all yours to manage
  • You're a team player who genuinely cares about making the hosts successful, even if you're mostly working behind the scenes
  • You're consistent and accountable. Every shift, same standard.
