Job description

O.R. Staff Nurse

The O.R. Staff Nurse provides professional nursing care to patients across the age spectrum within the Surgical Services Department; supervises and coordinates care planning with other disciplines. This position is represented by RCHEA.

Line of Responsibility and Authority: O.R. Staff Nurse-R.N. Float Nurse------ Director of Peri-operative Services

Education and Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Credentials in area of practice preferred, such as CNOR, PANAC, and AAOPU for Outpatient.
  • All Patient Care personnel must be initially certified prior to patient care and recertified every two years in American Heart Association BLS.
  • ACLS - all registered nurses employed in Nursing Supervision, Med/Surg, Emergency Department, Perioperative Services and ICU must be initially certified within six months of employment and recertified every two years in ACLS.
  • PALS - all Registered Nurses in ER must be initially certified. Med/Surg, Perioperative Services and ICU must be initially certified within six months of employment and recertified every two years in PALS.
  • All BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP certified personnel are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the crash cart.
  • Has a current California RN license.

  • Employee must conform with all HIPAA and other confidentiality regulations as required by the job, department, or hospital.
  • Frequently used equipment includes cell phone, computer, telephone/voicemail system, laser printer, monitors, glucometer, IV, PCA and epidural pumps, blanket warmers.
  • Occasionally used equipment includes photocopier, fax machine.
  • Category 1 for potential exposure to bloodbody fluids. Requires the performance of procedures or other tasks in the work routine that involve an inherent potential for mucous membranes or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues, or a potential for spills or splashes of them. Protective measures should be used while engaged in Category 1 tasks with exposure potential.
  • This job requires frequent bending (including the body bending from the waist), squatting, kneeling, climbing, work with arms above shoulder height, work with arms at shoulder height, standing, talking, hearing and performing repetitive hand motions. This job requires frequent transferring of patients including pulling, lifting or pushing a patient side to side, to a sitting position, to a standing position, or laterally. The employee will frequently push patients in wheelchairs, gurneys and beds The employee must demonstrate a pull lift of 50 pounds from the floor. Vision requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will occasionally be sitting and walking inclines and declines. The employee will not be driving or climbing ladders.

Demonstrates and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patients/individuals status and interpret relative to his age-specific needs, and to provide the care/service needed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills in regard to age-specific competency such as: Pediatrics differences in VSS and medication dosages; Adolescents specifics such as common disease entities and self-image issues; Geriatric needs in regard to mobility, Psycho-social/spiritual needs and death and dying issues.
  • Function as a scrub, circulating or float nurse in the operating room as assigned. Refer to O.R. Technician job description, Position Accountabilities (A, B and C) for scrub nurse duties; Refer to Circulating Nurse job description for circulating duties; Refer to Float Nurse job description for float nurse duties.
  • Maintain a professional, dignified atmosphere within the unit.
  • Maintains and meets expectations on time for all competencies, license, certifications and education requirements as outlined by local administration, Adventist Health (AH), The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and all other regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains established hospital-wide and departmental policies and procedures, departmental objectives.
  • Participates in site identification process and time out on each case.
  • Performance Improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Provide optimal physical and emotional environment for the patient.
  • Rotational assignments to PACU, Outpatient endoscopy Unit, and Central Service as assigned.
  • Share call duty as required.
  • Willingly performs other duties and innovations as assigned.
