What are some common challenges nursing lecturers face when balancing teaching, research, and clinical responsibilities?

Nursing Lecturers often juggle multiple responsibilities, including preparing lectures, mentoring students, engaging in research, and sometimes maintaining clinical practice. Balancing these tasks can be challenging, especially during periods of heavy academic workload or when research deadlines coincide with grading or curriculum development. Many institutions support lecturers with professional development resources and flexible scheduling, but strong time management skills and clear communication with colleagues are essential to successfully navigate these demands.

What is a nursing lecturer?

Nursing Lecturers are educators who teach and mentor nursing students at colleges, universities, or nursing schools. They design and deliver lectures, lead practical sessions, and develop curricula based on current nursing practices and healthcare standards. In addition to teaching, Nursing Lecturers may engage in research, contribute to policy development, and participate in the professional development of practicing nurses. Their role is essential in preparing students for successful careers in nursing and ensuring the quality of nursing education.

How do you become a nursing lecturer?

To become a nursing lecturer, you typically need a registered nursing license, a master's degree in nursing or a related field, and extensive clinical experience. Many positions also require a doctoral degree or higher qualifications, along with teaching experience and strong communication skills in a university or college setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nursing lecturer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nursing Lecturer, you need a solid clinical nursing background, a relevant advanced degree (such as a Master's or Doctorate in Nursing), and teaching experience or education certification. Familiarity with learning management systems, simulation technology, and current nursing education standards is essential. Strong communication, mentorship, and organizational skills help engage students and foster a positive learning environment. These competencies ensure effective knowledge transfer, student development, and adherence to academic and professional standards in nursing education.

How much do nursing lecturers make in the US?

Nursing lecturers in the US typically earn an average salary of around $70,000 to $90,000 per year, depending on experience, education level, and location. They often hold advanced degrees such as a master's or doctorate and work in academic or clinical settings, with some positions offering additional benefits or stipends for research and teaching responsibilities.

Are nursing lecturers in demand?

Nursing lecturers are in high demand due to ongoing shortages of nursing educators and the need to train new healthcare professionals. They typically require advanced degrees such as a master's or doctorate in nursing and experience in clinical practice or teaching. The role offers stable employment opportunities in academic institutions and healthcare education settings.

Work type: Instructional Faculty - Temporary/Lecturer
Location: Sacramento
Categories: Unit 3 - CFA - California Faculty Association, Temporary, Part Time, Faculty - Health Sciences

DEPARTMENT: Nursing

POSITION TITLE:ย Lecturer Pool - School of Nursing

POSITION DETAILS:ย

The Sacramento State School of Nursing is one of the premier nursing programs in California. We have a welcoming and supportive faculty dedicated to supporting the education of a diverse student body and advancing the profession of nursing. The School of Nursing prepares nurses to lead diverse individuals, families, and communities in achieving optimal health through nursing science, collaborative practice, advocacy, and service. We offer the following programs: traditional BSN, RN-BSN, ADN-BSN Collaborative, MSN - school nurse, School Nurse Credential, and planned BSN-DNP. For the traditional program, our NCLEX pass rates have been above 95% for >10 years. The benefits packages are outstanding. We encourage applicants who are transitioning from non-academic careers and who are committed to building an equitable and diverse scholarly learning environment.

Areas include:ย  Medical Surgical (Fundamentals, Basic Med-Surg, Advanced Med-Surg, Critical Care), Mental Health, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Leadership and Management, Community Health, Public Health, & School Nursing. Especially needed are faculty with multiple specialties and those interested/qualified to teach mental health.

Clinical courses occur weekdays mostly on day shift. On campus labs in the traditional program can occur any day Monday through Friday; MSN labs occur infrequently on a weekend. Courses in the traditional program are on campus but may include an online portion. Courses in the RN-BSN and MSN programs are hybrid, mostly online.

Duties of a part-time lecturer include instruction, class preparation, grading, and office hours. Other duties may be assigned based on departmental needs. Course assignments, including dates, time, and modality, are made by the Department Chair under the direction of the College Dean.

Part-time lecturers are instructional faculty with conditional appointments based on enrollment and budget. Hires from the pool of applicants are made when there are instructional needs to fill coursework offered by an academic department based on changing enrollment patterns, changes to tenure-track faculty assignments, and other factors that cannot be addressed with our existing faculty. Initial appointments are typically for one semester, but occasionally academic year initial appointments are made. Appointments may be renewed based on department needs, funding, and performance. Often appointments are made just prior to the start of the semester.

Rank and Salary

Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department.

Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:

Lecturer A: $5,507 - $6,677

Lecturer B: $6,221 $13,224

Lecturer C: $6,825 $14,523

Lecturer D: $8,593 $15,211

The salary ranges indicated are based on a "fulltime rate" (15 weighted teaching units [WTUs]). A semester's worth of compensation is made up of six (6) payments of the given amount. To calculate your salary for a semester, the base rate would be prorated based on the units worked out of 15 WTUs. If you were a Lecturer A assigned 3 units at the minimum salary, your pay would be structured as follows: $5,507 x 3/15 (3 units out of a possible 15 units total) = $1,101.40 x 6 checks = $6,608.40 total for 3 units/semester.ย

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • For the traditional program, applicants must have a minimum of a BSN and 5 years RN practice with at least one year being in the last 5 years and in the area of specialty.
  • For the RN-BSN or MSN programs, applicants must have a minimum of an MSN and 5 years RN practice.
  • An unencumbered CA RN license.
