Dept: Emergency Department Hours per pay period: 48 Hours Schedule: 6pm to 6:am

Position Summary:

Responsible for overseeing patient flow and the nursing plan of care for patients within the Emergency Department (ED) in accordance with established hospital and nursing policies, procedures and standards. Assists with patient care on an as-needed basis. Plans, implements, coordinates, and evaluates ED staffing and patient care. Guides and mentors all ED staff in daily nursing activities and decision making for patient and serves as a resource to the ED staff. Participates in the personal development plan for nursing staff. Oversees departmental nursing quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities, as directed.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Ensures clinical quality and efficiency within the Emergency Department.
  2. Responsible for assisting with staffing and scheduling of ED personnel. Adjusts and allocates assignments to meet patient demand and assure appropriate break and meal periods for staff.
  3. Assists in staff orientation, annual skills review, and mandatory/continuing education programs and other staff development opportunities.
  4. Function as a role model and nursing mentor to all ED staff.
  5. Participates in the Corrective Action and Annual Performance Evaluation processes of the nursing personnel.
  6. Assists with all aspects of patient care on an as-needed basis.
  7. Monitor and modify ED patient flow within the department to maximize efficiency, maintain quality, and promote patient satisfaction and employee/physician engagement.
  8. Assures the reporting, handling, and documentation of all patient incidents, variances in patient care, issues related to substandard quality of care, and safety issues.
  9. Keeps appropriate department leadership informed of all concerns, problems and project progress.
  10. Maintains proficiency for all nursing related equipment, supplies, forms and procedures utilized within the ED.
  11. Performs other related job duties as requested.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Two year ED experience as an RN
  • Associates degree. Graduate of a Nursing program.
  • Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse license
  • BLS certification from American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or Canadian equivalent, is required before start date and valid at least 60 days beyond start date.
  • ACLS, TNCC and ENPC required by end of Unit Orientation.

Preferred:

  • Current ACLS, TNCC and ENPC certification
  • Bachelors degree in Science in Nursing
  • Leadership experience
