What is a nurse practitioner?

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are advanced practice registered nurses who provide a wide range of healthcare services, including diagnosing and treating illnesses, prescribing medications, and managing patient care. They often serve as primary or specialty care providers and work independently or alongside physicians. NPs are trained to focus on both the treatment and prevention of diseases, often emphasizing holistic and patient-centered care. To become a Nurse Practitioner, one must complete a master's or doctoral program in nursing and obtain national certification. Their scope of practice can vary depending on the state or country in which they work.

What does a nurse practitioner do?

Nurse practitioners are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) with additional responsibilities including prescribing medication, examining patients, diagnosing illnesses, and providing treatment, much as physicians do. Nurse practitioners are educated and trained to provide health care services, such as the diagnosis and treatment of acute illness and chronic conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nurse practitioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nurse Practitioner, you need advanced clinical knowledge, diagnostic skills, and a master's or doctoral degree in nursing along with national certification and state licensure. Competence with electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine platforms, and diagnostic tools is typically required. Exceptional communication, critical thinking, and patient-centered empathy are vital soft skills for building trust and making informed decisions. These skills and qualifications are essential for delivering safe, effective, and holistic patient care in a variety of healthcare settings.

What are common challenges nurse practitioners face when balancing patient care with administrative responsibilities?

Nurse Practitioners often juggle direct patient care with a variety of administrative tasks, such as charting, coordinating referrals, and managing electronic health records. This dual responsibility can lead to time management challenges, especially in busy clinical settings. Many NPs find it helpful to develop strong organizational skills and leverage technology to streamline documentation. Support from collaborative teams and ongoing professional development can also help mitigate these challenges and ensure high-quality patient care.

Nurse Practitioner - Hyperbaric Medicine

MD Hyperbaric

Fayetteville, NY

$120K - $150K/yr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision

Re-posted 8 days ago

Job description

About MD Hyperbaric

MD Hyperbaric is a growing network of medical clinics bringing physician-supervised hyperbaric oxygen therapy to markets across the Northeast. Our Syracuse location is focused on providing access to HBOT for various patient populations: individuals recovering from radiation-related tissue injuries, non-healing wounds, patients experiencing sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL), and more. We partner with leading private practices and health systems to ensure patients have access to evidence-based HBOT when they need it most.

The Role

As our on-site Nurse Practitioner, you will be the local clinical oversight for every HBOT session at the Syracuse location. You will evaluate patients, supervise chamber sessions, document clinical progress, and coordinate directly with referring physicians. This is a hands-on, patient-facing role - not a consulting or administrative position. You will work closely with the MD Hyperbaric Medical Directors and collaborating physicians, and will be the primary clinical presence in the facility.

This role is ideal for an NP who wants clinical ownership, is interested in a specialized and growing field, and thrives in an environment where they are building relationships around a proven therapy.

Requirements

What You'll Do

  • Conduct initial patient evaluations for HBOT appropriateness - including review of health history, vitals, and referring physician notes
  • Supervise all HBOT sessions onsite; maintain physical presence in the facility throughout chamber operation
  • Document each session with a signed clinical progress note
  • Provide clinical documentation and supporting letters for insurance approval
  • Communicate with referring radiation oncologists, ENTs, and PCPs on patient progress
  • Monitor patients for HBOT-related adverse effects and respond appropriately
  • Maintain and support listed safety protocols
  • Participate in quality assurance and clinical protocol development as the program grows
  • Support collaborative referral relationships with local practices

Required Qualifications

  • Active New York State NP license in good standing
  • Board certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP)
  • Minimum 2 years of post-certification clinical practice; 3,600+ hours strongly preferred (NY full practice authority threshold)
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Completion of UHMS-approved Introductory Course in Hyperbaric Medicine (40-hour course) prior to treating insured patients. We will support scheduling and costs if not yet completed
  • NY State prescriptive authority

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clinical background in hyperbaric medicine, oncology, wound care, ENT, or critical care
  • ACHRN (Advanced Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse) certification or active pursuit
  • Prior experience working with commercial insurance prior authorization processes
  • Familiarity with hyperbaric medicine principles, chamber operation, or HBOT clinical protocols
  • Experience working with radiation oncology or head and neck cancer patient populations

Benefits

  • Salary Range: $120,000 - $150,000 annually, commensurate with experience
  • Schedule: Full-time; Monday - Friday, standard daytime hours during session scheduling
  • Training Support: UHMS hyperbaric medicine course enrollment supported - scheduling and costs covered by MD Hyperbaric for candidates not yet certified
  • CME Support: Annual continuing medical education allowance for hyperbaric medicine
  • Benefits: Health, dental, and vision; details provided during the interview process
  • Work Setting: This is a full-time, in-person role based at our Syracuse, NY clinic. You will be the primary clinical provider on-site during session hours.
