What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a nurse extern?

To thrive as a Nurse Extern, you need foundational nursing knowledge, basic clinical skills, and current enrollment in an accredited nursing program. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), patient monitoring devices, and hospital protocols is typically expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork are essential soft skills that set candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for safe patient care, effective support of the healthcare team, and successful transition into a professional nursing role.

What does a nurse extern do, and how do their duties differ from a registered nurse's?

As a Nurse Extern, you will typically assist with basic patient care tasks such as taking vital signs, helping with hygiene, and supporting patient mobility under the supervision of licensed nurses. While you may observe and sometimes assist with more advanced procedures, you won't perform critical tasks like administering medications or developing care plans independently. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience in a clinical setting, help you build confidence, and prepare you for the transition to a registered nurse position after graduation.
