What are some typical challenges faced by nuclear structural engineers in their daily work?

Nuclear Structural Engineers regularly face the challenge of designing and analyzing structures that must withstand extreme conditions, such as seismic activity, radiation, and strict regulatory requirements. They often work as part of multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with mechanical, electrical, and nuclear engineers to ensure all safety and compliance standards are met. Navigating evolving regulatory frameworks and implementing complex safety measures requires meticulous attention to detail and ongoing professional development. These challenges make the role both demanding and rewarding, as engineers directly contribute to the safety and reliability of nuclear facilities.

What is a nuclear structural engineer?

A Nuclear Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and ensuring the structural integrity of buildings, containment structures, and support systems in nuclear facilities. They work with materials that can withstand extreme conditions, such as radiation and high temperatures, to ensure safety and regulatory compliance. Their role also includes assessing seismic risks, performing stress tests, and collaborating with other engineers to maintain nuclear plant reliability.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a nuclear structural engineer?

To thrive as a Nuclear Structural Engineer, you need a strong background in civil or structural engineering, with knowledge of nuclear industry codes, standards, and safety regulations, usually accompanied by a relevant engineering degree and professional licensure (PE). Proficiency with structural analysis software such as ANSYS, STAAD.Pro, and knowledge of nuclear-specific design protocols and regulatory documentation is vital, and certifications like NQA-1 or experience with ASME codes are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial to ensure the safety, resilience, and regulatory compliance of nuclear facility structures, directly impacting public safety and project success.

S3D Structural Designer - USA

ReVisionz

Houston, TX • On-site

Contractor

This job post has expired today. Applications are no longer accepted.

Job description

ReVisionz is currently looking for experienced Smart 3D Electrical Designers to support us on a U.S. nuclear project.

The work involves converting existing Structural Revit models into Smart 3D. This role is expected to develop the detailed 3D model for structural systems under the direction of structural engineering. The role typically includes modelling structural steel, concrete, platforms, stairs, supports, equipment foundations, embeds and penetrations; producing drawings, material take-offs and fabrication or construction deliverables; and coordinating with piping, mechanical, electrical, HVAC, instrumentation and architectural teams to prevent clashes and support safe installation, access and maintenance. Because the work supports a nuclear facility, the designer must follow rigorous design standards, seismic and load requirements, quality-assurance procedures and configuration-management controls to ensure the model, drawings and physical plant remain accurate, traceable and aligned through design changes and as-built updates.

The project is expected to have 4+ months or so duration initially. While we expect project continuance, we cannot guarantee an extension.

Requirements

To be considered, candidates must meet each of the following requirements:

1.Have strong and recent proficiency in Smart 3D Structural (both modeling and drawing production) experience, used in the last 3 years in an industrial, EPC, owner/operator, oil and gas, chemical, energy, or process industry environment.
2.Must be a Canadian or U.S. resident and citizen.
3.Candidates with citizenships from other countries must be listed in Appendix A to Part 810, Title 10 Generally Authorized Destinations to be eligible: (https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-10/chapter-III/part-810/appendix-Appendix%20A%20to%20Part%20810)
4.Must pass a 5-panel drug and alcohol test, and a NATO security/background check.
5.Willing to complete a S3D skills assessment following a successful interview.
Additional Requirements:

  • A 13" Dell laptop will be provided by our client. You will be responsible for any additional equipment (webcam, keyboard, mouse, KVM switch, docking station, monitors).
  • As the role is fully remote, you will need a reliable internet connection of at least 100 Mb/s.
  • Strong proficiency in spoken and written English is expected.

If you meet all requirements above, are qualified and available for this 4 to 5 month contract please apply.
