Job description

Job Summary
  • Provides security, safety and guest services to enhance the overall environment for all patients, employees, physicians, visitors, and other guests of Vassar Brothers Medical Center and its corporate affiliates.
 
Responsibilities
Responsibility I: Provides security services to maintain a reasonably safe environment.
1.1 Responds to all requests for security services within a reasonable length of time, documenting each request on the daily shift log.
1.2 Conducts tours as directed by Security Policy using Morse data recorder for each shift, and identifies and documents safety concerns during each tour.
1.3 Provides parking lot security with a visible presence as scheduled by the director, manager or designee.
1.4 Collects, documents, transports, and secures patient valuables according to medical center policy as requested by the Nursing Department.
1.5 Reports to Emergency Room post at scheduled start time.  Maintains post at monitor station and does not leave except in emergency or other urgent medical center situations.
1.6 Completes a security log for every assigned shift in the Emergency Room.
1.7 Documents all reported losses, vandalism, safety situations, and other related security matters on a Security Department Incident Report Form and passes pertinent information to other staff members in a timely and efficient manner.
1.8 Conducts fire drills as scheduled and provides completed report including any identified problems with corrective action taken. 
 
Responsibility II: Maintains all assigned equipment to ensure proper functioning of all shifts.
2.1 Handles all assigned equipment properly and does not lose, damage or take home, with the exception of assigned radio belt clip.
2.2 Uses and maintains all department vehicles in accordance with department policy.
2.3 Performs daily tape exchange of multiplexer recording as assigned
2.4 Delivers by hand daily, portable radio and medical center keys to oncoming officer at change of shift.
 
Responsibility III: Provides other safety/security functions as requested by the director or manager to assist with routine services.
3.1 Notifies the director or manager immediately whenever a courier request exceeds driving fifteen (15) miles or more one way.
3.2 Trains all new employees as designated by manager of all aspects of shift responsibilities. 
3.3 Adheres to VBMC Policy & Procedure Manual and has a basic knowledge of all policies and  procedures written in the manual.
3.4 Inspects and documents all fire extinguisher inspections as assigned by coordinator, manager or director.
3.5 Provides coverage for lunches and breaks and other absences of parking garage attendant/valet as necessary.
3.6 Provides heliport services following department policy for all landings.
3.7 Assists during all snow and ice conditions by maintaining main entrance and walkways in accordance with snow emergency policy.
 
Responsibility IV: Promotes a safe and efficient working environment by adhering to medical center and department policies and procedures.
4.1 Adheres to Infection Control Policies and Procedures at all times.   
4.2 Maintains appearance of work area(s) according to department standards. 
4.3 Adheres to all safety regulations reporting any variances to manager immediately.
4.4 Attends and actively participates in all in-services as required.
4.5 Reports immediately all incidents, irregularities, unsafe conditions, equipment and/or unusual occurrences to coordinator or manager.
4.6 Accepts regulated medical waste, following department and infection control procedures at all times from only medical offices and businesses listed in the regulated medical waste log book.
4.7 Accepts sharps from community residents only when properly packaged according to Health 4.8 Department Policy and following department procedures.
 
Responsibility V: Responds to various emergency situations, including hazardous material spills, to eliminate or minimize unsafe conditions.
5.1 Provides crowd control and directs fire department officials to all house emergencies and disaster situations.
5.2 Responds to all reports of hazardous material spills within 5 minutes with appropriate clean up supplies and personal protective equipment.
5.3 Responds to all emergency security calls on ext. 72100, or through switchboard operator, within 2 minutes and completes incident report within 24 hours.
5.4 Provides direct supervision of violent or disruptive patients for a limited time as instructed by Nursing Supervisor.
 
Responsibility VI: Demonstrates regard for the dignity and respect of all patients, family members, visitors and Medical Center personnel as identified in the philosophy of Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
6.1 Displays a caring and courteous attitude and represents the Medical Center in a positive manner to all persons noted above.
6.2 Promotes and contributes positively to intra-departmental and inter-departmental relationships with no more than two complaints in a six-month period.
6.3 Maintains the confidentiality of employees and departmental information with no infractions.  
6.4 Adheres to departmental and Medical Center dress codes as observed by Supervisor, and wears a VBMC picture identification badge, 100% of the time.
6.5 Maintains a professional demeanor at all times recognizing that the position is seen as an extension of the Chief Executive Officer.
6.6 Develops rapport with Medical Center employees that enables them to bring concerns freely and with assurance information will be shared confidentially with Chief Executive Officer.
6.7 Demonstrates ability to work well with others to ensure all assigned work duties are completed in a timely and efficient manner.
6.8 Communicates effectively at all times to promote inter-departmental and intra-departmental collaboration.
6.9 Demonstrates willingness to assist co-workers and/or to accept additional assignments as requested to support the department's efficiency as observed by the supervisor.
 
Qualifications
  • Education:  Requires high school diploma or equivalent.  General knowledge of simple mathematics and writing skills.
  • Experience: Requires a minimum of six months of experience in security.
  • License:   Valid N.Y.S. Security Guard Registration card. Valid N.Y.S. driving license with a good driving record.
