The Medical Assistant performs administrative, clinical, and financial duties for the Pima County Health Department's Tuberculosis (TB) Clinic; providesassistance to physicians, physicians' assistants, and nurse practitioners; assists registered nurse case managers by testing patients' vital signs, recording medical histories, taking blood samples, and ensuring patients sign consent forms prior to consultation with the case manager.

Essential Functions:

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class. Work assignments may vary depending on the department's need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

  • Ensures that the clinic and equipment are cleaned, disinfected, and organized, and that activities conducted within the clinic comply with quality assurance practices, as well as risk management, safety, and infection control procedures;

  • Triages patients, takes readings of vital signs, draws blood samples, performs CLIA-waived tests, and assists patients to complete mandatory information and consent forms prior to consultation and examination by the registered nurse case manager;

  • Assists case managers with examinations, medical procedures, and treatment of patients including, but not limited to dispensing medication and providing information on the treatment and prevention of TB;

  • Performs daily checks on the TB Air Monitoring System, room temperatures, and the laboratory and medication refrigerators' temperatures to ensure they are set within the recommended optimal range;

  • Performs various administrative tasks including, but not limited to maintaining patients' medical charts and files, arranging collection and delivery of laboratory samples and patient's medication, monitoring and recording medication inventories, scheduling consultations, x-rays, and routine TB-related tests for patients, and registering patients with emocha Health and Straight Talk Prevention Services.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certification AND six (6) months of medical assistance work experience OR enrollment in a certified Medical Assistant (MA) Program or certification from a valid educational institute.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  • Completion of Medical Assistant (MA) course.

  • Experience working in an outpatient clinic setting performing administrative/front office tasksthat involve use of an electronic medical record, phone, interpreter services, registering patients, scheduling, direct interaction, communication with patients, the public, other medical entities to coordinate, schedule, follow up on appointments, and obtain records.

  • Experience working in an outpatient clinic setting performing tasks associated with direct patient care, collecting laboratory specimens, ordering & processing diagnostic tests, quality assurance testing & monitoring, performing lab draws, performing EKGs, reconciling test results, patient procedure prepping, vital signs, inventory management, medical equipment use and maintenance performing CLIA waived tests, use of personal protective equipment.

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Licenses and Certificates:Valid driver license is required at time of application.ValidAZdriver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant's suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services' review and approval of the candidate's driving record. This position requires either documented completion of a recognized Medical Assistant (MA) course or proof of current enrollment in such a program from an accredited academic institution or recognized vocational training provider. Current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is required on the date of appointment.

Special Notice Items:Department of Labor regulation CFR Part 1910.1030 requires notification that this category may have a high risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. In accordance with OSHA and Pima County guidelines, TB screening, Hepatitis B vaccinations, safety training and equipment will be provided. Employee must provide own transportation between facility locations. Some positions may require bilingual ability in English and a second language, as determined by the department head. The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Some positions may require satisfactory completion of a personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems. This position will require apost-job offer proof of immunization(s) or immunization(s) and/or a TB screening, physicaland/or drug screen, which may include respirator fit test.

Physical/Sensory Work Requirements: Constantly required to exchange accurate information. Constantly uses fine motor skills to utilize computer equipment and healthcare equipment. Constantly required to observe details at close range. Occasionally required to move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. Motion activity - grasping; Speaking Activity - In Person and on the phone; Vision - Motor Vehicle, Distinguish colors, Depth Perception, Peripheral Vision.

Working Conditions: Occasionally exposed to hazardous fluids. Occasionally exposed to the risk of needlesticks and exposure to communicable diseases.
