Job description

TB Hotline Coordinator, Bureau of Tuberculosis Control

The mission of the Bureau of Tuberculosis Control (BTBC) is to prevent the spread of tuberculosis (TB) and eliminate it as a public health problem in New York City. As the TB Hotline Coordinator (Junior Public Health Nurse), you will manage the Bureau of Tuberculosis Control's primary point of contact for inquiries related to tuberculosis. Leveraging your clinical knowledge and nursing background, you will provide essential support by answering calls from healthcare providers, hospitals, and the public, assessing their needs and providing accurate information. This role requires excellent communication, sound judgment, and the ability to navigate a range of challenging clinical and logistical scenarios. You will be responsible for triaging calls, coordinating follow-up with internal teams (e.g., case management) and ensuring seamless care transitions, especially regarding hospital discharge for patients with TB. While prior TB-specific experience is not required, you will be expected to quickly develop a working knowledge of tuberculosis, infection control principles, and relevant regulatory guidelines. Your contributions to the hotline, along with your commitment to accurate documentation and efficient communication, will be crucial to facilitating timely access to care and supporting the BTBC's mission.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Answer phone calls to the TB hotline in the Bureau of TB Control (BTBC).
  • Triage and escalate calls to appropriate BTBC staff as needed.
  • Respond to hospital discharge requests for infectious TB patients.
  • Work with BTBC case management staff to ensure appropriate discharge of TB patients from the hospital.
  • Accurately document all hotline interactions, including call details, information provided, and any follow-up actions taken. Assist in the collection of data related to hotline operations.

Preferred skills:

  • Current New York State Nursing License.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Working knowledge of, or willingness to learn, infection control principles related to airborne isolation and tuberculosis.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for accurate documentation and record-keeping.

Why you should work for us:

  • Loan Forgiveness: As a prospective employee of the City of New York, you may be eligible for federal/state loan forgiveness and repayment assistance programs that lessen your payments or even fully forgive your full balance. For more information, please visit the U.S. Department of Education's website.
  • Benefits: City employees are entitled to unmatched benefits such as a premium-free health insurance plan that saves employees over $10K annually, per a 2024 assessment. Additional health, fitness, and financial benefits may be available based on the position's associated union/benefit fund. A public sector defined benefit pension plan with steady monthly payments in retirement. A tax-deferred savings program and a robust Worksite Wellness Program that offers resources and opportunities to keep you healthy while serving New Yorkers.
  • Work From Home Policy: Depending on your position, you may be able to work up to two days during the week from home.
  • Job Security - you could enjoy more job security compared to private sector employment and be able to contribute to making NYC a healthy place to live and work.

Minimum Qualifications:

Residency Requirement:

New York City Residency is not required for this position.
