JOB SUMMARY:
To provide academic support to students who are English Language Learners to help them transition to speaking, reading and writing the English language
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To excel in this role, the individual must meet the following key responsibilities:
  • Conduct assessments and identify students for the Program.
  • Develop program curriculum.
  • Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal or visual instruction of English Language Learner students.
  • Provides individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and help the students make a satisfactory transition to a regular classroom.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve effective participation in all activities.
  • Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records.
  • Communicates with parents through a variety of means. Holds parent conferences to discuss the
  • individual student's progress and interprets the school program.
  • Communicates with classroom teachers regarding the Program and student information.
  • Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Additional tasks as assigned.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: The role requires frequent walking and standing.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment is generally stable, with minimal exposure to unusual temperatures, noise, or hazards. The position requires extended and non-traditional hours to fulfill job duties, as well as participation in organization-sponsored events and meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with:
  • Bilingual Education endorsement or ESL endorsement

LICENSES/CREDENTIAL: Valid Illinois Teacher's License (PEL).
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: All terms of employment are outlined by the collective bargaining agreement with the Steger Education Association.
