Job description

We are looking for an experienced Accounting Manager to support a nonprofit organization in Hartford, Connecticut. This Long-term Contract opportunity is ideal for someone who is detail oriented and can oversee core accounting operations, maintain accurate financial records, and help ensure timely reporting in a mission-driven environment. The role requires strong leadership in month-end activities, general ledger management, and audit preparation while partnering with stakeholders to uphold financial accuracy and compliance.
Responsibilities:
• Lead the monthly close process by coordinating timelines, reviewing entries, and ensuring financial data is finalized accurately and on schedule.
• Oversee general ledger activity, maintaining the integrity of account balances and investigating discrepancies when needed.
• Prepare and review journal entries to support routine accounting operations and proper financial reporting.
• Perform detailed account reconciliations and resolve variances to keep records complete and accurate.
• Support financial statement audit activities by organizing documentation, responding to auditor requests, and helping address follow-up items.
• Monitor accounting processes and recommend improvements that strengthen controls and increase efficiency.
• Partner with internal teams to gather financial information, clarify account activity, and support reporting needs.
• Maintain compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, internal policies, and applicable financial regulations.• Demonstrated experience managing month-end close activities in an accounting leadership role.
• Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting and financial reporting principles.
• Hands-on experience preparing journal entries and completing complex account reconciliations.
• Background supporting financial statement audits and coordinating audit documentation.
• Prior accounting experience within a nonprofit environment is strongly preferred.
• Ability to analyze financial information accurately and resolve issues in a timely manner.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a Long-term Contract assignment.
